When it comes to movies from that era, I sorta followed my mother's tastes. So I know the version of Little Women with Elizabeth Taylor playing Amy backwards and forward, in French and in English. Ditto The Sound of Music.

Here, we have the Sissi movies on TV pretty much every holiday... Though you have to be French or German to know what those are, I believe.

Sp it's not that I don't know any Old Hollywood movies. They're just very specific to whatever was popular here when my mother was growing up. And my mother grew up poor, so there isn't a wide variety.

Gone With the Wind is my aunt's favourite. My grandmother's was Doctor Zhivago. I also know those two movies pretty darn well as a result. Not a fan.

I will definitely check out Wizard of Oz because I'm sure I'll come across it at some point.

SO interesting how Quebec has its own culture and TV/movies that the rest of Canada doesn’t really know about! I need to make a trip sometime although I’m hesitant cause of the hostility if you don’t know perfect French??

Reports of our hostility to people who don't speak perfect French are greatly exagerated. Ask my sister-in-law who's lived here about 12-15 years and still doesn't speak much French because everyone busts out their baby English every time they hear her accent.

I mean, we have our nutters, same as everywhere else. And there is general expectation that, if you're gonna work with the public in some capacity, you ought to know French since, you know...

But beyond that? Politicians bang on about it because the boomers are very into language politics, and boomers vote more than any other generation. So that's all that is. (And, even then, my sister-in-law who doesn't speak much French? My boomer "French is our language" parents are the first ones to slip into English when talking to her.) Not everyone is fluent in English, but I imagine it's the same as if you go in any country in Europe or Asia. Some people speak better English than others.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that culture was the biggest industry in Quebec. We do have our own TV shows and movies. We also have a plethora of authors, playwrights, singer-songwriters, etc. In French and in English. I mean, I'm reading Martha Wainwright's autobiography right now. She grew up right here in Montreal.

All of that to say, if you want to visit, you should. If you visit Montreal, I'd recommend coming any season other than winter. It's darn cold in winter. But there are loads of other parts of Quebec that deserve to be seen, too. Many of which I need to discover myself!

And that is why reading the stories can be a little hard. Very old-timey in language and worldview.

It's been a while since I have read an old timey book in reference to a movie adaptation but that would be a good place to start!

If you find an actual Sherlock Holmes novel, I'd appreciate if you could pass along the title. I've only ever found collections of stories and it's made following the stories pretty hard.

Here is the poster for The White Bus (1967) starring Anthony Hopkins!

The lady in the poster is Patricia Healey who also leads in the film as "The Girl". Very little is known about her. The film is also just 46 minutes for a feature film.

Any TCM fans here? Today is the last day of their Summer Under The Stars. I hate that August means summer is ending but I love Summer Under The Stars.

The lenght of a movie doesn't determine its quality.

I have TCM... I think. I changed providers last December and I know some of my channels have changed, but I'm more aware of the ones I use...

I really to broaden my knowledge of classic foreign cinema.

I think it is a good thing to have a short future length film.

I've never judged a movie by its lenght.

I didn't have TCM for the longest time and just got it back recently so I've been enjoying it a lot.

Good movies come in all different lengths.
