How to Find the Right Frame for Your Face

This initial step is easier than you think. It’s all about proportion and opposites. The following four steps will help you find the perfect frame for you.

Identify Your Face Shape. Correctly identifying your face shape instantly reduces your optical possibilities from hundreds to just a few that are right for you. The general rule is to play against your facial contours. If you’re round, you need to go for angular frames. If your face is angular, go for rounder frames. To find your shape, stand in front of a mirror and pull your hair back. Take a washable marker or eye pencil and outline the contours of your face on the mirror.


Accentuate your best features - While a frame that plays against the contours of your face dramatically enhances your features, don’t underestimate the power of color. If your eyes are blue, a blue frame makes them stand out even more. And a simple black frame enhances all eye colors.

Size matters - The frame size should be proportional with your face size. The top of the frame should be no higher than your eyebrows and the bottoms should sit just above your cheekbones. They should not be wider than width of your face at temples.


Proportion matters, too. - Your eyes should be centered in the frames and the earpieces should be level, not tipped up or down on your face or the tops of your ears.
