She's lasted decades in an industry that heavily favours the young. And the praise Gillian Andersen has garnered has only increased over time. So you know she's solid. She's quality.
Definitely. It's so sad that if you're not 30 or younger Hollywood doesn't want a woman, but it shows that she has a lot of talent that she managed to not let Hollywood standards slow her down.

It's funny that you should mention Snape's arrested development, which is totally real and obvious, because I feel like Sirius's experiences had the same result for him. I don't know how much maturing Sirius did post-Hogwarts, but spending 12 years following the murder of his best friend probably didn't help him grow older gracefully.
So true. And since he was in jail for many years, not coming into contact with many people, and being (rightfully) obsessed with the murder of his best friend and being falsely accused for said murder, I can see how that kinda broke his brain and anything growth.

It's a tragedy for all involved.

Love Actually was very odd, in a sense, for the reunions of not only Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman but because Hugh Grant plays her brother in this one
 OMG yes, Hugh was in it! I forgot he played her brother. Too bad Kate Winslet wasn't in it as the person Alan was cheating with.

 It's definitely gross and unfair. And stupid, because it means we are more likely to see people with less talent who have more of a presence on social media than we are of seeing actual ladies with actual talent.

It also means Nicole Kidman's face hasn't moved in 12 years. So that part is sad, I suppose.

Sirius is, in some ways, one of the fictional characters I could have a crush on. :) The HP universe is honestly full of those. The great thing about fictional characters, and celebrities, is that you don't necessarily get to know the whole person. It makes it easier to like or to hate them, depending on the circumstances. :)

The fact that I've never had a crush on Hugh Grant, on the other hand, is the real mystery. If I have a physical type, it's the old cliché tall, dark and handsome. More specifically, talk, dark, handsome with light-coloured eyes. So, in theory, Hugh Grant fits.

And he's witty. Usually, that's my cryptonite. I'll have a crush on a short, blond guy with wonky teeth if he's witty enough.

And yet... Never happened. It's a mystery for the ages. :)

True, Sophie Turner already admitted she got the dark phoenix role because of her social media influence meanwhile a much more talented actress auditioned and was passed up.

Probably a bad thing that I laughed at this. Such a shame she keeps getting botox. She was perfectly fine without it.

Do you have a Gary Oldman crush?

The bad thing is when the celeb crush you have does something totally dumb or embarrassing and then it ruins the illusion. At least with a fictional character you can never be disappointed, especially if the series is over.

 Sense of humor really is a most attractive quality. It's like how Marc Anthony's father told him that he was ugly so he had to make sure to have the best personality / humor.

I didn't see those X-Men movies, so I can't speak to her performance. But good on her for her honesty. Because she can't be the only one that happened to. And it's not just the ladies either, I would imagine.

 It's hard, isn't it? You can't blame her for wanting to do whatever she can to help her career. And she can't be the only one doing botox either. She's just the obvious example of when it becomes obvious.

She is a great actress, too. It's unfortunate that she can't do her job and have access to the same roles while playing her actual age.

No. Never have had.

I have nothing against him, of course. But while it's obvious he's made good choices in his career and there is no denying his talent, the roles he's played are too weird and/or brutal for me to crush on.

For sure. There's even dumber, too.

I have a severe aversion to cigarette smoking. Smoking of any kind, really, but particularly cigarette. And many people I know and love are smokers, so when I say I have an aversion, I mean it. But I would also never judge a person based on their smoking.

But a celebrity crush? Nothing kills it faster for me than finding out they smoke. And they probably all do. So, you know, it's even that much stupider.

Billy Boyd. Not the tallest of men and rather fair. Still handsome, of course. But there you go. I like him. He's delightful in interviews. Similarly, Nish Kumar, a British comedian... not super tall, but so quick-witted. Love him.

Her performance was OK, nothing to write home about. I heard people say Saoirse Ronan was the one who auditioned and lost it because of her small online presence. Saoirse is a good actress.

I think it definitely happens with men too.

It's so crazy (and sad) to think that she has already proven herself as a capable actress, yet Hollywood doesn't care because they are more concerned with youth.

He also looks old in most roles, so I am not attracted to him

It makes me sad how all of Hollywood..or I guess most, smokes. And then photographers always try to get a photo of a celeb smoking to put in magazines.
I hate smoking too I can't breathe when people smoke and my eyes water.

I like watching James McAcoy interviews because of his charm.

If you think about it, it's no good for the ones who get picked because they've got however many followers on Instagram. Anyone can learn when you put them in the presence of better actors, but unless you're a super quick learner, it's gonna make you look bad.

I do assume they all smoke and maybe some of them don't. I wouldn't know because I don't want to know in case I find out they do smoke.

 Obviously, whether you crush on a celebrity or not is completely random and subjective, so there's no point in trying to find logic in it.

I've had a crush on John Cho for 20 years and I don't think it's going anywhere. And the reason I started crushing on him was because he made me cry in a episode guest-starring role on the third episode of the original Charmed series. And in that 20 years time, I have learned pretty much nothing about the man, which is fine with me. I mean, I know he's Korean and not Chinese, which his character was in that episode. But aside form that...

Exactly. I am not all that physically attracted to him, but I love love love his accent and how he is willing to talk during interviews. There are a few actors out there who it's like pulling teeth to get to talk and that's annoying.

It's a good thing not to go out of your way and try to find out things because there is always the possibility of finding out something that turns you off, like maybe a philosophical difference for example, and then it ruins the whole facade of the person and you don't want to watch them in anything anymore.

I'm the same way about Jack Whitehall for some reason. Well, not exactly. On his own, Jack's too much for me. But I find that, when he's on The Graham Norton Show for example, he makes everyone there better.

I also feel a bit skeevy knowing too much about people I don't actually know, you know? Like, yes, their job is in the public eye and, yes, that means that they have to put themselves out there more than some of them may be comfortable with. But I don't feel at ease knowing too many details.

I had to look up who Jack Whitehall is. He hasn't exactly made it in the states.

There seems to be a happy middle between someone who talks and someone who talks too much and takes attention away from everyone else. For example, Will Smith makes it all about him. So does Ricky Gervais. Whenever they're on a panel no one can get a word in.

It's why the best people to be a fan of are the people who don't give away a lot of info and don't make sure that paps are everywhere they go.

Well, the people I've liked the longest and seen work because of their presence are:
Cillian Murphy and then the two guys I mod for. Though I have to admit, with Ewan I was very disappointed when it was found out he cheated on his wife.

Ah, sorry. I'm Canadian. I know enough to know some UK comedians require more introduction on this side of the Atlantic, and Jack Whitehall definitely is one of them.

The funny thing is that I kinda think he tends to make things about himself a bit, but he's quick about it and he moves on to other people? I mean, I'm not sure. He just doesn't strike me as an excellent listener, that's all.

And we're back to the difference age makes, I think. I'm probably being very unfair to some of the younger folk.

But Meryl Streep, for example, has been around forever. In theory, we should know a whole lot about her by now. She's also among the best at what she does, so there is no lack of interest in her life. But we don't know much... probably because she's been married to the same man forever and doesn't go out partying every other night.

 I mean, I'm speculating here.

Ewan McGregor's another example of someone we don't know that much about, isn't he? If he hadn't had an affair, we'd still know nothing about his private life. And I'm not one to be impressed by people who have affairs, but then I'm also old enough to realize you don't know what a person's marriage is like and it does not good to judge a person by their "performance" as a spouse.

Loved Colin O'Donoghue in OUAT, but I haven't seen him in anything since then, which sucks because he was a revelation to me. :) And, again, tall, dark, handome with pale eyes. :)

There's an interview somewhere online with Cillian Murphy and Jaime Dornan and that was the first time I'd seen Cillian Murphy be relatively relaxed. It was beautiful. :) I don't mean that he's usually boring or anything like that. I've just always thought he was obviously uncomfortable in an interview setting. He's hardly the only one, isn't he?

If would be very strange if a 60-something year old woman was partying every night  But I get what you mean. I think it helps that she is so established, she doesn't need to drum up interest to get roles. People want her for her acting ability. It's the younger, just starting out crowd that needs to get people interested.

Yea, I think to anyone who isn't a fan, he does manage to keep things pretty private. He used to be very strict about not having his daughters photographed, didn't want their faces being out there. But now that he has a son with Mary Elizabeth Weinstead (she's the one he cheated with) he's less strict about keeping the son's face off the internet.
True, you never know what's going on behind closed doors. It was just such a kick in the gut because he was married for 22 years, had 4 daughters with his wife, PLUS his two oldest daughters were very publicly pissed about the affair. His oldest daughter, Clara, came right out and called MEW "trash."

I did like s2 Hook, but I have to admit I gave up on the show mid-s3 because of the writers insistence on getting Hook together with Emma. The pairing ruined Hook for me and I had to drop the show.
I still love Colin and will watch his work, but I can't re-watch OUAT because the Emma/Hook pairing left a sour taste in my mouth.
He's doing some voice work now and a podcast. It's hard because he lives in Ireland so that made working during the pandemic impossible.

I haven't seen the movie he did with Jamie yet, but I want to see it. I've seen some interviews of them together and Jamie really got him to come out of his shell.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the need younger actors have to get noticed.

I'm just saying that it's not every established actor who bothers to have a home life either, though it is likely easier for them... inasmuch as anything is "easy" in that business.

 You know, my parents weren't together for nearly that long and I still felt that way about my stepmother when my parents split up. So I won't fault his daughters for having issues with the affair. It's so much easier to remain neutral when you're an outsider to such events.

Plus, and again I don't pretend to know what's going on in anyone's private life, but I would imagine his ex-wife was more present in their daughters' lives since he had to travel for work. That's certainly I would admire about someone in that business. It just makes for a rather dull interview sometimes. I don't really know how else to put it. I'd prefer a person who chose to have a full life and keep their private life private. But, at the same time, part of the job is to give interviews and I'd rather people who aren't comfortable doing that not be made to do it..

Olivia Colman (who won an Oscar for Best Actress a couple of years ago) is famously terrible in interviews because she doesn't remember anything about the movie she's "selling," down to the name of her character. But she's so funny. In fact, if I had any sort of bisexual leanings, she'd be a crush for me.

I think I remember Ewan taking them on location with him. Like when he was filming Big Fish in...Alabama? They were enrolled in school there. And I know they were on the Down With Love set with him because Clara has posted photos of it. So I assume for long shoots they were uprooted so they could remain together.
But I get the point of, you're always going to side with the parent that you're closer to or maybe not even closer to, but the parent who has been wronged.

I think a lot of the time, and this isn't even specifically about OUAT, audiences just ship whatever couple the writers are telling them they need to ship. If writers give two people scenes all the time, even if they do lack chemistry, people will just go along with it because it's the writers intentions. I think general audiences don't want to put a whole lot of thought into finding different couples than what's presented to them.

I think that, regardless of a person's walk of life, some people just don't age gracefully, you know? Not that you need to be staying at home and be boring because you're near 50, but at some point you kinda need it's creepy.

Not to make any insinuations at all about anyone's character, but the other famous grown men I can think of who were still partying hard at that age were predators. Obviously, I'm assuming one can be too old to party without being a predator, but it's just not the best look. That's all.

Again, everyone's divorce experience is difference, but you also usually get to a point where you realize your dad could have been a crap husband without being a crap father. It starts off as a betrayal, but then as you get older and there is distance with the event... Life goes on and it would be a shame to miss out on great experiences because you can't forgive mistakes that weren't necessarily about you.

And if their mother is anything like the grown adult my mother was, she will have encouraged her kids to maintain or repair their relationship with their father. Because, aain, just because someone isn't a great spouse doesn't make them a bad parent.

I know exactly what you're talking about and I do tend to fall in the category of people who usually let themselves be told who to ship for. I haven't watched fiction TV shows in an age (I stick to true crime, cooking shows and historical documentaries mostly) but I don't really remember shipping anything but canon pairings... Althought, now that I think about it, they had Josh and Donna end up together on West Wing (I was no longer watching by then) and I would have hated that.

 I get more insulted when they do ship-batey stuff. You either go there or you don't. And I stopped watching CSI because they had Grissom and Sara be a pairing when that show was supposed to be a non-ship zone, so that pissed me off because I had my own little fantasy going (and I was quite happy to have it never show up onscreen because, again, we were told it was a shipper-free zone).

The thing I loved about Olivia questioning Jack's accent is that she was so clearly not being mean about it. She's just a wonderful ditz... on talk shows anyway. There was another interview I saw on The Graham Norton Show where she was all "I hate talk shows. Well, of course, except this one. But we really only do them because it's in the contract. And I don't even know why they send me. Because i don't help, do I?" And it was so charming.

The accent thing is always interesting, though. I remember when the Angelina Jolie movie Taking Lives came out. It's set in my hometown of Montreal (I mean, I live here; I'm not from here). So the producers or directors or whatever thought it was a great opportunity to get some French actors in... only they mostly went to France for their actors. That'd be like having Jack Whitehall play an American, but without attempting an American accent at all.

You can imagine how well that was received here. And it's also always an issue when any French Canadian artist goes on French-from-France talk shows and stuff. They always have to either put on a French accent, slow their speech way down or get asked to repeat themselves forever.

That's all.
At some point a person just comes across as try-hard and embarrassing when you're on the older side and still partying or doing anything for attention. It can happen to both men and women. You have Leo on the male side and Madonna on the female side.

And if their mother is anything like the grown adult my mother was, she will have encouraged her kids to maintain or repair their relationship with their father. Because, aain, just because someone isn't a great spouse doesn't make them a bad parent.
 The ex-wife (Eve) showed great maturity. When the press came calling, she didn't chew Ewan out in public. She put the kids first. And she hasn't refused to be in a room with him, so there's that.

I ship canon and UC ships, it really depends. Like with Roswell I loved Max/Tess, and most of the audience despised Tess so much that they wanted the actress to be deported. And with OUAT I liked Hook/Aurora and I am pretty sure they only spoke 10 words to each other. So I am very all over the place when it comes to shipping. Sometimes I even like a ship in theory (Oliver/Felicity in Arrow) and then when they do get together I'm not feeling it anymore and drop it.

Oh man! My mom hates them. And I get it, certain shows don't need shipping. It's like how on the show Forever, they had Henry and Jo start to like each other and it was unnecessary, imo. Plus the lead actors didn't even have romantic chemistry.

 I couldn't resist posting the videos knowing he did appear on Graham with Olivia to promote The Favourite
Also, I would hate to be asked as a celeb what my hidden talent / party trick is because I literally would have nothing to offer

 And I am sure many other actors would agree with her

OMG I totally read this wrong and thought you said Jack was in the movie and was playing an American but kept his regular accent and I was like :goof: even non-native English speakers have to know the English and American accents sound different

Now that I understand what you're saying, years ago I was watching the French-Canadian actor François Arnaud on a French -France show and the commenters from France were poo-pooing his accent. It came across to me as them being very mean.
And me being American, I can't tell what makes the way French-Canadians and French-France people speak different.
