HSM News/Appearances #1: Keeping us up-to-date!

Just read this:

Zac Efron is such a sweet guy. He says there was no way he could be the one to take away High School Musical from all us fans!

In a recent interview with Billy Bush from Access Hollywood, Zac says, “Seriously I am not going to be the guy who takes ‘High School Musical’ away from all the fans. We owe everyone too much. ‘High School Musical’ is a project I hold very close to my heart and I am going to complete the franchise.”

But that doesn’t mean that he wants to play the teen heartthrob forever. In fact, that’s just the reason he chose his most recent role in Seventeen Again. “It would have been really easy to go and play a kid. I could’ve done that in any movie. But playing a 37-year-old guy who is a kid is a little bit more interesting,” Zac told Billy. “It’s great when you have personal experience playing a character. For instance, ‘High School Musical.’ It was pretty easy. I was playing a high school kid in his first love. Everyone has been there – I had just been there.”

Billy tried to get Zac to open up about Vanessa, but Zac quickly put that topic of conversation to rest. “I think specifically relationships, it’s sacred ground. That’s something that needs to be between two people. Everyone else can get their noses out.”

It's the Start of Something New - the massive Disney hit High School Musical is being turned into a London show.
The musical will be put on in London for 10 weeks from June, with the actors have yet to be cast.

It will be based on the story of Troy and Gabriella from the first film, which bopped to the top when it came out in 2006.

The West End show will differ from the 31-date UK tour, which has its official opening in Bromley, Kent, on Monday.

It will be the latest Disney show in London following Mary Poppins and The Lion King.

Around 200 million people have seen the original film since it was first broadcast.

The movie won two Emmy Awards and the soundtrack became the world's Number One album.

Unlike the first two High School Musicals that were broadcast on TV, High School Musical 3 opens in cinemas later this year.

High School Musical Set for West End Run
by Broadway.com Staff

Disney's High School Musical is coming to the London stage. Already a hit TV movie, a quadruple-platinum soundtrack, a bestselling book and a chart-topping DVD, the live version will open at the Hammersmith Apollo Theatre on June 30 after a 31-date U.K. tour. Jeff Calhoun, who staged the U.S. national tour of High School Musical that began life at Atlanta's Theatre of the Stars a year ago, will direct the West End production.
High School Musical is a contemporary musical comedy about Troy, a popular high school basketball star, and Gabriella, a shy, academically gifted newcomer, who discover they share a secret passion for singing. When they sign up to audition together for the lead roles in the school musical it threatens East High's rigid social order and sends their peers into uproar. In an attempt to maintain the status quo, the jocks and brainiacs, and even the drama club regulars, are soon hatching convoluted plans to separate the pair and keep them offstage. Defying expectations and taking a chance on their dreams and each other, the couple inspires the other students to go public with some surprising hidden talents of their own.

The stage adaptation of the Disney Channel original movie features a book by David Simpatico (adapted from the original movie script by Peter Barsocchini) and a score including all songs from the original version, including the hit singles "Breaking Free" and "We're All In This Together," plus two new numbers. In addition to Calhoun, the creative team will includes the U.S. production's choreographer, Lisa Stevens.

They were so cute. One of the little girls got her blue dress from the scene they kissed and in the frame was the picture of them hugging after the kiss too. So cute.

I finally saw that last night. Adorable. My daughter was freaking out about Sharpay's robe, but that little girls face was priceless when the video was over. :)

ABC heads to 'High School'
Network developing new reality competition
size=1]By MICHAEL SCHNEIDER[/size]

'High School Musical' will get the reality treatment from the Alphabet.

ABC is finally getting a piece of Disney's "High School Musical" franchise.
Net is developing a multiepisode reality competish themed to the "High School Musical" concept, with a nationwide talent hunt followed by a group of contestants studying at a music conservatory to hone their skills.

ABC is targeting a summer airdate for the "High School Musical" reality series.

Contestants will be eliminated each week until a final winning performer is chosen. Net is keeping details of that top prize under wraps for now, however.

Reality skein will include plenty of "High School Musical"-themed moments -- with appearances by the franchise's stars likely. Network is in discussions with a production company to handle the show, but that deal hasn't been finalized.

Project marks the first time the Disney Channel has shared the "HSM" franchise with a sister network. It's likely the kid-centric cabler will repurpose a second window of the reality skein.

Disney has licensed "High School Musical" to actual schools around the country for stage performances. That led to last fall's Disney Channel/Barbara Kopple doc "High School Musical: The Music in You," which followed a Texas theater group as they staged the play.

"High School Musical" is a major revenue generator for Disney; the conglom forecasts that consumer products related to the franchise will reach $650 million in sales this year.

The original "HSM" has been seen by more than 250 million viewers worldwide, the sequel by about 187 million.
