So much of the movie was largely improvised. Not surprising since that is where a lot of the cast came from. Improvisation. The entire scene in Bill's shack with him and Chevy was all completely improvised. That scene was only added on afterwards when they realized they had two of the biggest comedy stars at the time in the same movie and they didn't have a scene together.

The movie went through several drafts before filming and none of them included Bill Murray's character. Even when they asked him to finally be in it, he still had no part in the script.
