I think he was in a couple episodes

And I think his main purpose was to show how great a companion Rose was

He was an example of a not so great companion.

I wasn't either. Honestly he felt like wasted time

But he did prove a point that the Doctor doesn't just keep anyone with him. I also don't get why they needed to give Rose a two episode tiny romance arc.

yeah it was strange but this was before she fell in love with the doctor

It was. Plus she had Mickey as well. The Doctor was insistent about calling Adam her boyfriend throughout the whole episode
