Yeah, we were lucky. They crafted something that was true to the characters, and gave Max and Liz their moment. That is why I think despite some evidence to the contrary, they already knew Max and Liz were the couple. They played with them, and gave them too much extreme angst. And who knows what would have happened if Tess had stayed, and they really had something with the baby storyline. But at the end of day, when they came to giving the show a end. They gave Max and Liz something special.
Sure, they were on the run. But they had a epic proposal, and even before that, the grand sacrifice. We saw a glimpse of their wedding day. Max got his dream girl. And Liz found love. The road was rocky, but they managed it in only three years. They gave both couples Max and Liz, and Michael and Maria something to be blessed at, because it could been ten times worse. __________________
