Red Dwarf Appreciation #1 - Isn't pizza with a curry sauce everyone's favorite food?

Red Dwarf is a British scifi comedy about the hodge-podge crew of the mining ship Red Dwarf: Lister (a human from 3 million years in the past), Rimmer (a hologram), Cat (a... well... cat), Kryten (a mechanoid), Kochanski (Lister's ex-girlfriend from an alternate dimension), and Holly (the ship's computer).

There have been 8 seasons of Red Dwarf, and a movie is slated for international release in late 2003. Currently, the show airs sporadically on networks around the world.

Don't they have some like miniature things called Red Dwarf? Is that the same? Or different? 'Cause I always thought it was like Warhammer...

Mogley 01-15-2003 01:26 AM

Hrm, never heard of Red Dwarf in terms of games. There might be something out there, though.

Yes, that's it! I knew it was something dwarf...but yeah, the show just from the brief description sounds as if it could be highly amusing with really random stuff.

First question for the thread .. Has anyone heard if the upcoming DVDs for the show are the original versions or the 'enhanced'/Remastered versions .. or both?

Both would be nice!! .. but if they end up releasing dvd's of the enhanced eps .. I most assuredly will have to keep my vhs tapes too. Cause I adore the original versions. The remastered are slick but I like the originals better.

edited out second question since found the answer ..

The first series of Red Dwarf launches on shiny disc.

For some the wait has been harder than Rimmer's eight astro-navigation exams, but November 4th is finally here. Red Dwarf Series I is in shops everywhere on DVD - and we're here to tell ya, it's a corker of a release.

Currently out in Regions 2 and 4, this two-disc set is packed with extras. Cast commentaries, deleted scenes, outtakes, trailer, featurette, plus brand new documentary, and a whole load more appear on the bonus features disc. You can get full details on al the extras - along with a full behind the scenes account of the making of the discs - from our DVD Details section.

Stateside fans in Region I should also stay tuned to DVD Details, where we'll be profiling the American discs as they approach the February release date. Apparently the Region 1 cover art is going to be quite different...

Bizarrely, there is one area set to obtain all eight series on DVD during 2003. As part of the mounting Dwarf-mania in the area, Japan will be having all the series, released in two blocks of four, on the shelves next year.

The dubbed Japanese discs will not contain any of the additional material or animated menus planned for the English language versions. More news as we have it - in the meantime, check out the Japanese version of The End on the DVD. It's an unforgettable experience.

Two DVDs will be coming out every year. Following the release of Series I in November 2002 and Series II in February 2003, all other series will come out in the same Nov-Feb pattern. These UK/Region 2 dates will be approximately the same for Australia/Region 4. America/Region 1 plan to release pairs of series together, always in February.

It is anticipated that the movie will be released in the winter of 2003 worldwide.

Red Dwarf! This was the highlight of my week when it was on...but it's not anymore! Well, here anyway.

Me and my mum still quote it, here's one we always use:
Permission to look smug, sir.
Permission granted.
*smirks arrogantly*

And that guys salute to the captain!

News if anyone from the UK is interested:

Re-runs of Season one

Quote:

Starting from next Thursday at 11.20pm with premiere The End, BBC2 is repeating the first series of the hilarious sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf.

For those of you who have been in their own personal stasis, Red Dwarf is about Dave Lister, the last human being in the universe. A lowly technician on the mining ship Red Dwarf, he wakes up one day to find that the rest of the crew has been killed by a radiation leak. He has been in stasis for three million years.

Lister is doomed to drift in space for the rest of eternity with only two companions: the hologram of his former crewmate, Rimmer, and a creature called Cat who has evolved from a pet he smuggled on board.

I'm sure folk are interested .. the question that sticks is .. are they original versions of the eps or those crapy remastered ones.

:looks about: was my feelings for the remastered ones showing? It's not that they even sucked or anything .. but they cut some good lines and put in computerized people and skutters and grrr that sorta deal. But the picture is clear.

I don't think they say, I'll watch on Thursday and find out.

I hope they are the original ones.

*is insanely jealous* I wanna move to England...

According to Amazon, the release date for series 1 and 2 in the US is February 25. I'm contemplating putting my pre-order in.

jjt 01-18-2003 07:00 PM

I was rereading the article on the dvd's and the talk of the US versions having different cover art.

Is there any difference in the content of the DVD's?

I see that the UK versions state on the front there is over 90 minutes of outtakes, deleted scenes, interviews and extras and I was wondering if the US version will have the same amount.

The DVD's are on my to get list, I already got the videos ages ago.

jjt 01-21-2003 05:18 PM

Seems to be the same content from what I can tell .. UK folk correct me if you see differences.
