Names inspired by Sci-Fi/Fantasy Discussion #1
There was a discussion on the Farscape thread a while back about things people had named after stuff on Farscape, which got me thinking: if there's one distinctive feature common to both Sci-Fi and Fantasy, it's unique and interesting names. Names that are perfect when you have a pet, inanimate object, or child to name, and you want to demonstrate your love for the genre.
So, everyone 'fess up: what have you named after a sci-fi or fantasy character, and why? __________________

I'll go first ...
- When I was in grade 6, my parents bought a cat, and I got to name her. I ended up naming her Trixie, but how I heard it in my head was Tricksie as said by Gollum from The Hobbit, because she was mischievous and liked to jump out at people out of nowhere. - I have two computers in my apartment named MOYA and TALYN, after the two living ships from Farscape. Moya is bigger and represents "home", where I spend all my time. Talyn is sleek and black and finicky. - I have a new kitten that I named Willow after the character from Buffy. She's not red, but she does have magic powers ... like the ability to disappear and find her way into my dresser drawers. __________________

If I ever have a daughter, I'm naming her Claudia Aeryn.

One of my cats is named Farli after an Anne McCaffrey firelizard and another is named Yoda. The third cat is named Stuart Little, but he came from the shelter with that name.
If I ever have a son, I want to name him Jeran after yet another McCaffrey character (although the name is very popular in SF, with various spellings). I'm not sure what I'd name a daughter, but there are many J names from SF. Some I like are Jancis, Jule, and Jaina. My car is Moya and my bike is Serenity (after the Firefly ship). My bow is named Moon, both because of Diana/Artemis the archer and after Joan D. Vinge's character Moon Dawntreader. I'm also thinking of renaming my various computers for the home network after Catherine Asaro's AIs and internal webs. __________________

I named this statue of a knight my mum has 'Sir Cadogan' after the painting in Harry Potter. That's about it, though.

I forgot, but I named my toy snake Nagini, which I think is the name of Voldie's snake in GoF. Lame, I know
Miss Cranky-Pants congrats That'll be a cool middle name if it's a girl __________________

I have this computer game Petz 5, and I constantly name my Catz and Dogz after characters in Star Trek and Star Wars. Right now it's Tom, B'Elanna and Harry from Voyager.

I niknamed my bus driver Sparky or Buckwheat (Whatever comes out first) after Rygel on Farscape. He acts and sometimes sounds like him.
I name my stuff after all kinds of... stuff. My old TV and VCR were Mulder and Scully. My parents TV and VCR are John and Areyn. My new TV is Harry (Potter). My DVD player is Paul (Atredies) and my parents DVD player is Leto. [ 11-05-2003: Message edited bizkitprinzess ] __________________

My family's first dog was Pockets (named from Hook), and my cat is Catalina (from Space Cases).
Not planning on getting myself knocked up any time soon, but I do like Zekk as a name for a boy (would have to give him a terribly normal middle name to make up for it, though... hmm, maybe Dennys (pronounced Dennis, not Denny's)), and Menolly Elizabeth for a girl. (Okay, Elizabeth's not a sci-fi name, but it balances Menolly out nicely, don't you think?) |
