General Sci/Fi Fantasy News #3 - Resurrecting a Genre

Ok, new thread time.

Sum, you're perfectly free to criticize whatever you like. We've had this discussion before. However, coming to a thread, spouting out criticisms and opinions on a subject, and then not offering your why to go with it can be taken poorly by the other folks on the thread. Again, this is something we've discussed before, especially when you consider that you're taking a stance against a movie that has a large fan base and is widely liked. Remember, this is a discussion forum, it's hard to discuss varying points of view when the underlying "why's" are never brought out.

As to the fox and the hen analogy, it does fit, though you may not like it.

Lastly, me being the moderator on here has nothing to do with our current discussion. Even if I wasn't the moderator, I'd challenge you for just spouting random opinions. That's my nature, as bright cheery as it might be.

Now, let us commence with the news....such as questioning why V might be a mistake to come back. I loved the original, but I'm not sure how much better it could be in today's day and age.

The Matrix being widely liked or not doesn't in any way incur any extra obligation on me to explain myself. Saying otherwise is basically penalizing people for coming out with unpopular opinions. And I think that is what all this is about. And for the record, people all over this board, yourself included, have often put forward opinions about or against things without explaining themselves. It's common practice. On a "discussion forum". So giving me trouble over it is nothing short of double standards.

On the contrary, no it does not. It portrays me as the aggressor, when in fact it was you who was the aggressor. I came along and mildly posted an opinion and you gave me trouble over it. I defended my right to express my opinion and I got more trouble. I asked for peace and I got fox and hen analogies thrown at me.

On the contrary, your being the moderator has a lot to do with our current situation. It puts you in a position of power and in a good position to put pressure on and bully. Pressure coming from a mod is a lot heavier than pressure coming from an ordinary poster.

And for the record, I don't appreciate you putting a row with me into the very first post of the new thread. You'd have been better off dropping it. There never was any point to it anyway.

Now, we've had our tensions in the past, but we've also gotten along fine many times too. So I wish we could return to that latter state of affairs. I've already previously asked for this argument to be shelved and for us to try to get along.

Are we talking V as in "V for Vendetta" V?

Sorry if I'm dense, but half the movies out there I never realized were based on comics.

There was no bullying going on, you were simply being challenged in your opinion, which is what happens on discussion threads and is expected.

If you felt pressured then you could have simply stated so, but you do come across as aggressive when challenged in your opinions. I'm not trying to sound like I'm taking sides or attacking you. I just felt another opinion on the matter may help in pointing out what someone else saw.

Secondly, if there is an issue, it might have been better to discuss it via PM, because frankly, when I read these first two posts to a new thread, I was uneasy about replying because of coming between a discussion.

V as in the miniseries and later television series about aliens coming to Earth. Here is the miniseries' page at imdb.com: V (1983) (TV)

Should this thread be topped where the old news thread is?

No, I wasn't simply being challenged on my opinion. I was being told I couldn't express my opinion without elaborating on it with whatever cryostar considered "facts". I have no problem with being challenged on my opinion. What I have a problem with is unreasonable restrictions being put on what I have a right to say.

I think it was quite clear from what I said that I felt pressured. I didn't need to state it because what I said made it very clear.

I wasn't being challenged on my opinion, I was being challenged on my right to express an opinion without having to provide whatever cryosstar considered "facts".

I'm afraid you're butting into a personal conflict between a mod and a poster. I for one don't appreciate it. I'd appreciate it if people left this between cryostar and me.

Well I have pointed out that I didn't appreciate cryostar putting a row between me and him into the first post of the thread. I don't see what point there was in him continuing it. If he felt the need to continue it, I don't see that putting it in the first post was a nice thing to do. It puts me very much on the spot. And frankly I feel rather accused, what with his whole fox and hen thing (see previous thread), so I felt the need to reply to the accusation in the place where the accusation was made. But I'd be happy if he were either to drop this or take it to PM. But if somebody accuses me publicly then I'll defend myself publicly. I'm sorry if I've had any part in making you feel uneasy. If I had my way this argument would have stopped back on the previous thread when I asked for it to be.

Thanks for the link and information!

I hadn't heard of it before.

I didn't mean to butt in. I was simply sharing my opinion. If it's a personal matter, then it shouldn't be posted on the board. Otherwise, anyone is free to express their opinion.

I am hoping it will be as successful as the new incarnation of Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who. I loved the old 'V' while I grew up as a kid in the 80's. Also, did you know that the original creator of 'V' is creating a spin off of his original creation? The 'V' you spoke of Jerry, is an adaption by someone else - just how in the same light Cupid is also being remade by two separate people/companies/entities at the same time. But in this case, one of these V's is a remake erm, sorry *ahem* "Re-imagining" and the other is a continuation of the original story written by the original 'V' writer/creator set 25 years after the original.

It is Cryostar firstly, secondly it is I, not me. By the way, I am kidding mate! I know it is like stroking a rattle snake but I like to test my endurance once in a while. Have a couple of Beers or Guinness' while typing a retort.

That's what I'm trying to figure out Clint. Which is this, the "re-imagining" or the continuation? I'm not sure I'm good with either one, but it could be keen. It also seems like it might be a lot of subject matter that's already been tried.

You do the whole flying saucer thing, it's Indepedence day. You do the whole infiltration thing, it's Invasion. It seems like this subjects been tried, and failed. I'd hate for this to attempt it, only to fail miserably.

Sum, I'm always free to PM.

Thread has now been stuck.

I'm somewhat interested in it...more the concept than the movie.

I think it would be an entertaining watch.

But I won't see it in theatres. I'll just wait for the DVD.

Well DVD is always better, can pause if I need to and not miss something.

Plus there is no annoying chatter or cell phones from other people ruining the movie.

Re the "I not me": Pretentious nonsensical grammatical rules that fail to relate to what's the natural way to talk. I don't waste my time following grammatical rules I look down on. As for the capitalization, not really worth your "joking" about.

What did you guys think of the movie "The Forgotten" starring Julianne Moore?

I really liked that movie, it had a good story.
