Because that's the way the wizards who founded the slayer line set it up. Buffy changes that at the end of season 7 by having Willow cast a spell that forces slayer status on thousands of girls world over.

Vampires and demons are all over the world, but particularly in Sunnydale, where the Hellmouth is.

And there were others at/around Buffy's age, too, so there are more than one.
When a slayer dies another is called to replace them. Buffy died at the end of season 1, so another slayer (Kendra) was called. Buffy came back to life, but Kendra was still a slayer. Then Kendra was killed by Drusilla, so Faith was called. Unfortunately nobody ever killed Faith.

I got that.
But doesn't a Slayer called at birth?
That it's clear, at least for the higher powers who's gonna be a slayer the day they're born?

Never liked her either, huh?

But I was glad she turned 'good' in her last Angel episode. Though I would have liked to know what happened with her after that.

I think you become a potential at the time of birth, but not called until the previous slayer dies. The powers probably know ahead of time who they are choosing though.

I can't say I was Faith's biggest fan, but I didn't hate her either.

See, you don't really get that either.

Nope, I definitely hated her.

Faith appeared again in Angel season 4 and Buffy season 7. I never found her turning good convincing.

I was surprised when she did turn good, but maybe that was just because I didn't expect to ever see that happen.

I only liked her after she turned good, though.

I never liked her at all. In season 7 she came off like a slob and ordered Dawn around in her own house and eventually stole Buffy's leadership position.

For me Faith had her good moments, like her talk with Buffy in the last season when she told Buffy that she had never felt more alone when she was leading. Though in the earlier seasons I found her really annoying.

Aw, I liked Faith. Didn't really find her turning good convincing either, but she was one of the better villains in the show IMO.

I can't seem to remember that, but I would definitely love it.

Dawn was a marvellous character, brilliantly portrayed by Michelle Trachtenberg and arguably the most relatable character on the show.

There's never been a character that annoyed me more.

There's nothing to get annoyed about.

The show had many genuinely annoying characters -Willow, Xander, Faith, Anya, Andrew, Glory, etc. Better to be annoyed with them than with a sympathetic amusing character like Dawn.

Dawn is my least fave character on the show. I understand why they brought her in but I hated her so much. She's so annoying!
