Harry Potter Series by J. K. Rowling Appreciation #1: Welcome to Hogwarts!

Welcome to the 1st Harry Potter Appreciation Thread
Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by the British author J. K. Rowling. The books chronicle the adventures of the adolescent wizard Harry Potter and his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, all of whom are students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The main story arc concerns Harry's quandary involving the evil wizard Lord Voldemort, who killed Harry's parents in his quest to conquer the wizarding world and subjugate non-magical people (Muggles).

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Harry Potter thinks he is an ordinary boy - until he is rescued by a beetle-eyed giant of a man, enrols at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, learns to play Quidditch and does battle in a deadly duel. The Reason: Harry Potter is a Wizard!
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The plot follows Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, during which a series of messages on the walls on the school's corridors warn that the "Chamber of Secrets" has been opened and that the "heir of Slytherin" will kill all pupils who do not come from all-magical families. These threats are followed by attacks which leave residents of the school "petrified" (that is, frozen). Throughout the year, Harry and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger investigate the attacks, and Harry is confronted by Lord Voldemort, who is attempting to regain full power.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter is lucky to reach the age of thirteen, since he has already survived the murderous attacks of the feared Dark Lord on more than one occasion. But his hopes for a quit term concentrating on Quidditch are dashed when a maniacal mass-murderer escapes fro Azkaban, pursued by the soul-sucking Dementors who guard the prison. It's assumed that Hogwarts is the safest place for Harry to be. But is it a coincidence that he can feel eyes watching him in the dark, and should he be taking Professor Trelawney's ghoulisch predictions seriously?
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
When the Quidditch World Cup is disrupted by Voldemort's rampaging supporters and the resurrection of the terrifying Dark mark, it is obvious to Harry that, far from weakening, Voldemort is getting stronger. The ultimate signal to the magic world of the Dark Lord's return would be defeat of the one and only survivor of his death curse, Harry Potter. So when Harry is entered for the prestigious yet dangerous Triwizard Tournament he knows that rather than win it, he must the through the tasks alive.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter is due to start his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Unusually for a schoolboy, however, Harry is not enjoying his summer holidays. He is feeling neglected by his friends, and, as ever, the Dursleys are making his life a misery. But Harry has had enough. He is beginning to think he must do something, anything, to change his situation. Then the summer holidays come to an unexpectedly dramatic end, and Harry is thrown back into life at Hogwarts School. What Harry is about to discover at Hogwarts will turn his world upside down...
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Harry's sixth year at Hogwarts begins, and it feels like a reassuring place to return after the strange events of the summer. Disappearances, murder and an ominous chilling mist which swirls through both the Muggle and wizarding worlds are harbingers of more sinister purpose. Voldemort's army is swelling and with it the Death Eaters are growing bolder and more deadly. Suspicions are rife, and allegiances questioned as even the safest havens cease to feel secure from the Dark wizards. As the storm gathers strength, Harry must face the terrifying truth of his destiny.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Harry has been burdened with a dark, dangerous and seemingly impossible task: that of locating and destroying Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes. Never has Harry felt so alone, or face a future so full of shadows. But Harry must somehow find within himself the strength to complete the task he has been given. He must leave the warmth, safety and companionship of The Burrow and follow without fear or hesitation the inexorable path laid out for him.

Great books, really.

And I love Prisoner of Azkaban.

The movies... hm...

They are good.
And up to the fourth I think they did a pretty good job with bringing the books to life, too, but with the fifth...

The changes were just too big and many things missing.
The film in itself is great, really, but knowing the books I was totally disappointed. *sigh*

I tend to agree with you here. I thought the fifth was still okay, but I didn't really get into the sixth movie Probably because they had to leave out quite a bit, knowing the books it is hard not to notice they had to cut some things. Of course the movie was more dark overall, but that goes in sync with the book.

I didn't really think the sixth movie dark, only the things with Draco and that closet.
The fifth one was dark.

Of course they had to leave things out, but it was just too much in the end.
Then there were things that never happened in the book or things happening in a different order.
And there was too much teeny movie in if for my liking.

Teenie? I thought six was darker than five, but maybe I'm mixing things up - it has been a while since I watched them. Gonna dig out my DVD's and do a re-watch.

One thing I know for sure is that I'm still struggling with the 'new' Dumbledore Not to say that Michael Gambone isn't doing a good job, he is, I just think that Richard Harris will always be my Dumbledore.

Yes. Too much teenage romance and all.

And I know what you mean about Dumbledore.
Michael Gambon does a good job, but Richard Harris... that man was the real, perfect Dumbledore as you imagined him.
