I loved the first half of this season; the second half not so much.

I liked season 5 ;)

livstevi21 07-31-2015 01:25 AM

I'll bring over my episode discussions of this season I think. :D Yeah, the second half of this season is tough to watch, but there's still episodes in that half that I love, like Fragile. I'll discuss Vengeance later. ;)

Cyborg is probably my favorite episode from the second half of the season.

I like that too

Long awaited discussion of Vengeance. :D :P

I like the way this episode handles the grief of Jonathan's death, especially obviously between Martha and Clark. Clark is holding in his grief and anger and finding it hard to say goodbye. Poor Martha is mugged whilst taking Jonathan's belongings to a shelter in Metropolis. Why in a suicide slum part of the city in the pitch black I have no idea. Kinda stupid, really. But it does set the episode up to help Clark through his grief. An unknown female vigilante saves Martha, who takes up a duo identity to mirror Clark's eventual future. There are many such references in this episode. Clark is determined to get Jonathan's watch back that was stolen and he and Chloe investigate the new vigilante. Her story is very sad, being mugged and her mum killed, having a heart transplant from a girl who died in the meteor shower giving her super hero like powers. Her anger was ten-fold and she had no one to keep her in check. I liked how Clark said that it was hearing his father's voice that stopped him from killing that mugger.

When she went over to kill Lionel having found out he may have been the one behind the attack, Clark found his sense of self and stops her from killing him, knowing that killing isn't the answer. It irked me when Lionel called him 'son' afterwards and Clark didn't say anything, but he did say later not to call him his son.

I loved the scene with Clark and Chloe trying to get the masked avenger woman in the act, with Clark acting as a mugger and getting Chloe to scream help, especially when she put passion into it yelling "STOOOPP" lol. Her face was priceless.

I previously mentioned why it never made sense that we didn't see more of Clark at Central Kansas, but I forgot that he dropped out at this point because of there being too much work at the farm. It's understandable given the sad circumstances, but I see no reason why he couldn't have re-enrolled at a later date. But I guess he still had a lot on his plate afterwards, given what happens later. Still, no reason why we couldn't have seen more of Chloe at Met U.

I liked that Lana was pro active in helping Clark through his difficult time despite their differences and that she searched all the pawn shops in Metropolis and found his father's watch. That was actually very sweet.

I loved the scene with Martha and Chloe at the Daily Planet. It was sweet how Martha tells Chloe that it's nice that she's there to help carry Clark's secret. It was a very sweet moment between them and I wish they had more scenes like that together.

Lastly, the last scene with Martha watching old footage of Jonathan with a young Clark, Clark's face as he sees the tape and their embrace as he finally lets his emotions out and cries. So beautifully bittersweet and sad. Gah. I can't. :bawl:

Aww such sweet scenes, I especially liked the Chloe/Martha scenes too, there should definitely of been more of them ;)

livstevi21 08-09-2015 01:30 AM

Totally. I haven't watched an episode for over a week now! Will probably watch Tomb and Cyborg on Tuesday. :look:

I really didn't like the Vengeance episode but I love your recap/review on it.

livstevi21 08-11-2015 04:54 AM

Thanks! :D

Tomb - Love this episode mainly for the Chlark scenes and Chloe finally visiting her mother. Interesting that the skeleton of poor Gretchen Winters (isn't that the name of one of the plastics in Mean Girls?) had been behind that wall all that time whilst Lana, Lois and a number of others had lived in that apartment. I hated how everyone but Clark would believe Chloe would actually slit her wrists. Especially Lois. She's not the person to do that sort of thing even if she was stressed with juggling college and her work at the Daily Planet, she's not her mother. I do like how it was really about Chloe finding the courage to visit her mum having been scared of seeing herself while looking into her mum's eyes. Loved that scene with Clark saying she should visit her in case she never gets the chance again. I also love the scene where he breaks her out of the hospital before she gets taken to Belle Reve (thanks to Lana for running to Lex). Why it was deleted I don't know. :sigh:

I liked the scene with Martha and Clark at the end where Clark says she should take Jonathan's Senate Seat.

Cyborg - Great episode, loved Victor Stone and his story. Productive episode for Clark, too. Saving Victor from being made into more machine than man, quite rightly barging his way to Lex's mansion and rightly accusing him of such experiments, and yet Lex vehemently denies being part of it and convinces he's still one of the good guys. There's a deleted scene in Tomb with Lex and Lana where he says he's not the villain everyone makes him out to be, which was quite interesting that such a scene should be left out. Because although Lex may think he's saving lives by creating new life for someone who should have died, he's just playing god to someone who didn't want to become a machine. Lex points out to Clark about his barging in without a 'hello' or other such small talk but by this point I think Clark would be past doing that with him, and gets to the point with anything bad to do with Luthorcorp. I also find it interesting how in this episode, Lana asks Clark for help instead of Lex. I thought she said she didn't know how to talk to him anymore (Tomb).

Meanwhile, Martha is being blackmailed with a dvd copy of CCTV footage of Clark saving Lana in Lockdown. Lionel makes it his mission to sort it out for her and earn her trust by 'sorting' it out, but it's so obvious he's behind it, just so he can get close to her. I found it quite unsettling when Martha pretty much referred Lionel as a friend when he mentioned he shouldn't be seen associated with her for 'fear' of ruining her Senate Seat. I kind of missed the Luthor opera scenes, so that last scene was pretty ominous, with Martha burning the disc and Lionel looking at the same CCTV footage "your secret is safe with me, Kal-El". You know, I think by this point, the writers just got confused as to whether Lionel was good or evil. 'Cause I sure as hell was. Keep a character trait and stick to it!

Hypnotic - I have kinda a love hate thing with this episode. On the one hand, I HATE how Lex hires this Simone to hypnotise Clark to force him and Lana apart. I think without that, Clark and Lana would have eventually parted ways anyway. They were already drifting apart. And it was so not fair on Lana. It was awful to see her hurting so much, despite my feelings toward her, when she saw Clark and Simone making out and he confessing, (under hypnotism of course) that he loves someone else. Mind you, she should have probably noticed something was not right with him. But that's not really her fault. And despite the end when she knows he was being hypnotised, Clark tells Chloe he's going to break it off with Lana once and for all 'cause he can't stop hurting her. It's funny that Chloe tells him to really think about it, cause if he does it, that's it, door closed, no second chances. Pah, S7.

I liked the sub-plot with Lex in the Honduras finding Milton Fine.

And then there's that hot/awkward scene strip scene. Can't find a clip of it on youtube. :(

And then there's that moment when Chloe knocked a hypnotised Martha about to kill Lois unconscious with a rolling pin.

Chloe: "Oh my god, I just knocked out Martha Kent"
Lois: "Hello? The woman was about to wallpaper her living room with my brain matter"
Chloe: "Right."

Void - Lana hooked on death drugs. Yeah, I kinda hated this one too. I can understand her feeling hurt and alone, but "killing" herself to see her parents was just not like her at all, let alone stupidly dangerous. What about Aunt Nell? What about her biological father Henry Small? It seems like the writers forgot she had any family left at all which is dumbfounding. I know Aunt Nell left for Metropolis with her new parter and Henry Small had to have time to work things out with his wife, but there was no reason why, 2-3 years later that she couldn't have contacted them.

I did love when Clark went to the other side and saw Jonathan there. That was really heartfelt. It was great that Jonathan warned Clark of Lionel knowing his secret. Poor Clark at the end when he sees Martha going out to a formal Senate dining with Lionel. I still can't fathom how Martha considers Lionel even a friend. I love the contrast with Lex on the other side with his mum. I also liked Clark going to the Honduras after Chloe's source tipped off that Milton Fine/Brainiac had been spotted with the ship. But other than that, this episode was kinda dope.

Fragile, on the other hand, is one of my absolute favourite episodes of the show, not just S5. And I'm not just saying that because Tom directed it. He did a beautiful job with this episode and I loved how Clark helped Maddie. Everything about it was just too darn adorable. :sigh:  I also loved that Martha made Lois her chief of staff.

Lois.

The only thing that spoiled it was Lex and Lana's kiss at the end.

eternalfate 08-22-2015 08:35 PM

I gotta say that I totally love your reviews and I totally agree with you on the episodes Void and Hypnotic... Hypnotic is a episode I could have done without. That was the best way for the writers to break up Clana and push her to Lex?
I also agree that Lana should have known he was on something. lol... but I guess she was just so shocked and hurt at the moment to think of it. :(

livstevi21 08-27-2015 02:55 AM

Thank you. :D And I totally agree.

Just a quick synopsis on the next two episodes…

Mercy was a strange episode, but definitely interesting getting into Lionel's mind. Seeing how much he affected people badly over the years to the point where one man hated him so much he wanted a very expensive revenge - setting up all those 'games' for Lionel must have been pretty costly! Hated how Martha was bought into it but it did show how he cares for her. Even so, I still can't understand Lionel's true intentions given that he knew that gun wasn't loaded when he went to shoot himself whilst in that elevator with Martha. He was acting all noble but was he really?

Fade is a pretty forgettable episode for me. But there were a few moments that I liked. Lois playing a violent video game on that big plasma that was bought for Clark was funny. I liked that Clark didn't want to accept an expensive gift and only appreciated a thank you from Graham for saving his life. The scene with Lois coming out of the shower and opening the door to Clark was hilarious - Clark's face. Basically just these scenes.

Becwelling 08-27-2015 10:39 AM

I loved Mercy, I did think Lionel's intentions towards Martha were well meant ;) but he just always loved himself more ;)

Fade was good too
