Episode Discussion: 6x02 Bargaining, Part 2

Since we aren't going to have new episodes to discuss, we're going to have weekly episode discussion threads for old episodes. New threads will, of course, appear each Tuesday.

Bargaining, Part 2

As the Scooby Gang retreats from their mission to raise Buffy from the dead, the Buffybot is captured by the Hellions. Unbeknownst to the fleeing Scoobies, the spell did not fail. Buffy awakens inside her coffin and, clearly terrified, starts to fight her way out of her grave. As Xander, Willow, Anya and Tara hide in the woods, Spike attempts to protect Dawn from The Hellions, who are trashing Sunnydale. Knowing that a gang like The Hellions would never attempt an attack on Sunnydale if they knew that The Slayer was still protecting it, Spike and Dawn realize that the word is out about Buffy's death. Meanwhile, back at Buffy's gravesite, the Slayer's hand launches itself through the ground. Buffy emerges to face her own gravestone, then wanders dazedly through the chaotic streets of Sunnydale. Having regrouped at the Magic Box, the gang decides to find Dawn and Spike and do what they can to fight the Hellions. The resurrected Slayer watches from a distance as The Hellions pull apart the Buffybot with chains hooked onto their motorcycles. Buffy screams and the demon gang begins chasing her. Suddenly, Buffy comes face-to-face with Xander, Willow, Anya and Tara, who realize that the spell was successful. After they back the frightened Slayer into a corner, the Scoobies find themselves lured into a Hellion trap. Razor and six other demons attack and are almost immediately engaged in a brawl with the Scoobies and Buffy, whose fighting instincts seem to slowly be coming back to her. After Buffy kills most of the Hellions, she runs away from the battle. Tara plunges Xander’s battle-ax into Razor's back to finish the fight. Buffy, still not fully in tune with reality, stands on what is left of Glory's tower. As she appears to be getting ready to jump again, Dawn finds her. Unfortunately for the Slayer and her little sister, the structure begins to topple. Buffy saves the two by sliding to the ground on a steel cable. Glory's tower slams to the ground. We are left with Dawn hugging her confused, almost lifeless, sister.

RtS: #38; beat The Harvest in the first round; beat Surprise in the second round; lost to Fool For Love in the third round.

I don't love this episode quite as much as part one, but I do love it a lot. The scenes of Buffy clawing at her coffin and digging her way out of her grave are absolutely horrifying. I wanted to brain the Scoobies - why didn't someone consider digging up the coffin before starting the spell? It was no wonder Buffy was such a traumatized wreck, wandering through the streets. The Scoobs' decision to take on the Hellions was amazingly stupid, if well-motivated. They should have listened to Anya for once. The Dawn/Buffy scene on the tower was a killer. I hadn't been much of a Dawn fan in S5 - outside of her scenes with Spike and a few of the later episodes - but I sure loved her here.

Please feel free to post your comments, screencaps, favorite scenes and quotes.

Next week: 6x03, After Life.

Dawn was spectacular in this ep. Particularly in her marvellous scene on top of the tower, trying to get Buffy to come to her senses, imploring with her not to jump off and leave her behind again. Great scene. And I loved it when Tara killed the demon leader with an axe to the back. And there's also the great scene with Spike knocking a hellion demon off his motorcycle with a baseball bat and riding off on the motorcycle with Dawn on the back in a football helmet.

It was nice to see how much Spike cared for Dawn because of his promise to Buffy to take care of her if anything was to happen.

I actually think *this* part, is far better than the previous. Bp1, kinda dragged, this episode, I really enjoyed.

Loved the Buffy waking up in her coffin thing, so creepy. And the Buffybot dying *sniff* so sad. The tower scene, the Buffy getting her "ass kicking" face, when they beat her.

I have to say, SMG gave a bloody stellar performance in this episode. And her and MT in that last scene, worked really well together. I loved how she was all "Is this hell?"... really sad.

Yes, I agree. The "top of the tower" scene was one of the best performances MT ever gave as Dawn.

SMG was terrific in this episode and even more so in
After Life, which followed it. Her creepy, silent Buffy was riveting. You just knew something was terribly wrong, but had no idea what it might be.

I'm a bit disappointed we didn't get more interest in this episode. Hopefully we'll do better with the next ones.

Yes, I should've come over to comment myself, but this week has been crazy. I still ahven't caught up from the 4th of July yet.

I enjoyed this part as much as the first, for all the reasons mentioned above.

My only nit pick was the somewhat gratuitous Spike enjoying the carnage, which wouldn't have been bad except for the lady screaming and how she was screaming, leading me to wonder what she was screamig about exactly and getting squicked as to the posibilities. Yeah, we get it, Spike is Evil - do we potentially have to have him enjoying a woman getting attacked? If that wasn't the message - a guy screaming would've worked quite nicely, thank you.
