In real life, addiction is a disease. It is basically a malfunction of the brain in the way it produces different Neuromodulatory agents involved in processing reward, stress and self-control. It has nothing to do with evil.

Not at all about addiction being a disease: nobody's going to sell you the cold or the flu; but drug-dealers always have been selling the objects of addiction to their "customers" (more properly termed abuse victims: because drug abusers always are abused by the chemicals they take into themselves), and it is also very clear that those who are evil do abuse drugs, on a regular basis; so the two clearly do go hand-in-hand.
Yet I heartily also admit that we can, will for as long as it takes, and do agree to disagree on that- but that's where the evidence comes into play.

Whew, I think I’m gonna get as personal as I ever got on this website because I just can’t keep silent on the subject.
So, my youngest, my 17 year old baby boy has a condition that is very painful, sometimes debilitatingly so. It’s not a life ending illness in itself but he will never not have it. the health system denies him strong painkillers because of his age. But as a mother, I find it impossible to watch him in so much distress, limit his life to his bed most of the time. So yes, it is me who finds ways to procure him stronger medication at times. It is maddening still, it kills me that my child has to suffer. He’s always been taking it in his stride, so brave and kind, strong and he still laughs. He plans a future based on work he can do lying down. But I wonder, is he going to run out of this positivity? As I mother you have to wonder, with the health system not helping as it should, is he destined to be a drug addict? And if so, can anybody fault him for it knowing his background?
Well yes, people like you would. My son is evil, right? The people who allow me to help him are evil, right? Right?

You are right to bring this up; but no, he's not evil; his case is one of extreme misfortune... still, that's a very valid critique, and I thank you for bringing that stance up.
I was addressing her, Harmony's, taking up smoking as an act that's self-destructive, and that's how addiction is not a disease, but is the fruit of acting up. Yes, there're clearly cases that don't fit that, but presumably your son is going to fight back against the possible addiction, and as long as he would do that: he'd preserve his virtues.

Well, that was part of my point: her smoking is her acting up at that... my problem is expecting the *actress* to take up smoking, as a workplace ethic.

I think there were two scenes where Harmony smoked - that's hardly making the actress take up smoking. Plus, they have fake cigarettes, so it might not even have been real

I would hope so, but even that could poison the stage-worker's lungs; I'm not either of them, so my ability to speak up for them is limited, as it should be; yet still: that kind of habit, as even smoking once is sufficient to engineer an addiction, is to be frowned upon.
Remember: the stage-workers are real people playing fictional people, they're different from characters written in a novel, very different indeed in terms of what is ethically permissible thereabouts. And if you're directing a film you owe them more than you'd a fictional character in a novel you might write.
