^^^Yeah, I thought their best scenes in S5 were in that episode where Riley was dying from The Initiative drugs in his body. Buffy really showed how much and loved and cared about him. So I felt they had nice scenes in early S5 before they completely threw Riley under the bus. That football scene is cute lol, I wish they all had more scenes on the beach. It was so different and relaxing.

Even though that scene from season 5 was great, I felt the writers already intended to break them apart from the first episode of Season 5 ...
5x01, she's sleeping with Riley but I got the feeling that she wanted something more or something, and then obviously she let Dracula bite her... which I don't think Riley truly got over and understandably so... 5x03 - Riley admits to Xander that Buffy doesn't love him. So by the time 5x04 airs it was more for NEEDING to hear the "I love you" words now. Obviously she CARED about him but I think in general, he needed to feel and hear the words... |
I agree it would of been nice for him to hear the words, but actions speak louder than words and I feel Buffy showed that in that one episode when he almost died. I've seen some couples on TV shows where they don't write them to say ILY but they sure as hell show it many times. It was also kind of a plot point since they needed more incentive for Riley to leave the show.

I agree that the writers did go into season 5 intending on breaking Buffy & Riley up :(
I think that a part of Buffy checked out, but that wasn't because of her relationship with Riley or that she didn't/couldn't love him, but just her slayer issues. Unfortunately, all that came at a time where Riley needed more from Buffy :( |
I agree. There were other things that also put pressure on the relationship like Joyce's health, dealing with Glory, and her sister being a new key that could unlock Hell. So in general, some of the worst things that could happen came to a head that didn't help their relationship either. It's a shame how it all ended in S5.

I just realized, Riley having that scar across his eye reminds me of Sub Zero from Mortal Kombat lol. Loved his return in S6.

I loved it being shown that Buffy still has feelings for Riley when he returns, but it makes sense since it was the last serious relationship she had and she regretted letting him go.
