But to clarify what I meant early, Sophie nailed it pretty much. The remasters were NOT authorized by Mutant Enemy/Joss, and basically what Fox did was upscale them to 16:4 from the original 4:3 ratio. In doing so, they went back to the original masters for the episodes, HOWEVER, these masters did not have some of the effects placed on them, as well as you can see crew members in certain shots.

Joss is pretty adamant that he didn't intend for the show to be seen a 16:4 resolution. I think if given the time, he'd gladly go back and remaster the show, but he likely wouldn't make it widescreen.
