Thanks for starting this, co-mod.

It's funny to have both of these episodes lumped into one thread because they couldn't be more different in quality:

Everwood Confidential = imperfection
The Unveiling = perfection

Everwood Confidential was the only slip up Berlanti had in all of season 1, and as a reult, I will let this episode slide. I mean, it wasn't a totally horrific episode, but it did seem like wasted space during the vast majority of it. It just seems as if it was added into season 1 as purely a mistake. lol The only thing I liked about this episode was Laynie revealing to Ephram that Colin was going to break up with Amy shortly before his accident. I found this a powerful bit of news. I think it was Berlanti's way of inserting a flaw into the C/A relationship as well as showing the relationship from Colin's perspective, the perspective we never knew about.. Up until this point, we were only told about the relationship through Amy's perspective. The Harold/Andy stuff was pretty ridiculous. Like I said, this episode was a slip up by Berlanti but I will forgive him because the rest of season 1 was absolutely fabulous.

Speaking of fabulous.. The Unveiling.. Wow, what an episode! This episode is the definition of how great Everwood can be. All around flawless acting, beautiful storylines, nice tone and flow throughout the entire episode. This episode had it all. To see the interaction between Julia/Ephram, the revelation of Julie/Andy's marriage difficulties, followed by Ephram/Andy's powerful confrontation... It's as good as it gets. One of my favorite episodes of not only season 1, but the entire series.

I so agree, co-mod. As I was creating the thread, I thought we couldn't have two more different episodes in this topic.

Episode Summaries/Pictures

Quote:

#117 - "Everwood Confidential" (Original Airdate: 02/17/03)
When Dr. Abbott's (Tom Amandes) dementia-plagued, elderly godfather (guest star Luke Askew) confesses to a murder that took place 30 years ago and reveals that Abbott's father was his accomplice, Abbott and Dr. Brown (Treat Williams) join the investigation in an attempt to find out what really happened and clear the men's names. Meanwhile, Ephram can't seem to keep Amy (Emily VanCamp) far from his thoughts, causing major problems in his burgeoning relationship with Laynie (Nora Zehetner); and Andy and Ephram's new piano teacher (guest star Ian Vogt) butt heads over what is best for Ephram.

#118 - "The Unveiling" (Original Airdate: 02/24/03)
Approaching the anniversary of his mother's death, Ephram (Gregory Smith) confronts a repressed memory of his father (Treat Williams) cheating on his mother, causing an even bigger rift between father and son that eventually leads to a firestorm of emotions. Meanwhile, Amy (Emily VanCamp) grows concerned that Colin (Mike Erwin) might not be recovering as well as everyone thinks when he gets violently ill on one of their dates.

The only thing I enjoyed about Everwood Confidential was the Laynie/Ephram storyline. Aside from that, it was useless. But, The Unveiling was fantastic! A truly heartbreaking episode. We finally got a chance to see the bond Ephram had with his mother, and to find out she was having an affair. It was just ... one of the finest hours Everwood has produced.

I have a confession to make. I actually liked Everwood Confidential, a lot. It had it's funny moments. Besides, even a bad EW episode is still good.

I like The Unveiling too, it was a very good episode but it's not in my top 3. I know that most people love it but it's not my favourite.

I thought it was funny that EC dealt with the Spanish Flu since I learned about it in school. But seriously, that flu was really tragic. So many people died.

I have to agree with Ken.. I have never heard someone up until now, say that they strongly liked Everwood Confidential and didn't consider The Unveiling in the elite category episodes on the show. lol

Everwood Confidential- Puts me to sleep, lol. Won't say much bout it, I'll be nice I think the sole purpose of this episode was to get Harold and Andy some more 'bonding' time. Anyhow... moving on..

The Unveiling- One of my favorite episodes. Won't go on and on about it. Great acting, great plot, loved the flashback moments between Ephram and his mom. So sad! Like Greg has said, it really shows what Ephram lost when his mom died and really justifies why he's so angry all the time

Totally agree, Ashley. The Harold/Andy bonding thing was one of the intentions of this laughable episode, but damn, that experiment failed miserably. It seems weird to even say this because 99.99% of the time I love any Harold/Andy interaction. However, the content of this episode was so ridiculously pathetic, it forced me to even dislike that Harold/Andy interaction. This episode is just.. bad.

The Unveiling was so picture perfect, I could even get goosebumps thinking about the greatness that is this episode. Everything about it.. beautiful.. just beautiful.

I think what made that episode so great was Brenda Strong and the idea that, even though we've only seen brief shots of her ... this was a way for us to understand the bond Ephram had with her, and the relationship he had with his father. It put the entire show into perspective.
