Congrats Leo for the great mark in English!

Does anything actually happen then? Like one or two short-term courses or something?
You know, that's a very good question. I have no idea, hee. Well, it is more like three weeks, because the final exam is Tuesday or Wednesday, and then profs still have a few days after that to get final grades posted online. It must have something to do with the amount of people that have to graduate, but I really have no idea. A mystery for you to solve when you get here.

And yes, I had no ideas for a new title, but I'm sticking to that "actually" on delivering Giant Posts of Introversion, because I'm free, free, free now!

Canada confirms 4 swine flu cases among students
What's going on? Should we be concerned about another possible pandemic?

You're going to have to explain this all to us, Betty, because you're the science one!

The weird thing is the disparity between how the swine flu is affecting America and Canada versus Mexico. In Mexico, it's actually killing people, and severely hospitalizing others. In Canada and America, it's barely been hospitalizing anyone who has had it, and they've recovered and are fine now. What's up with that? It's all so early, which adds to the confusion because even the experts seem to have no idea what's going on right now.

Good plan. Because we need to hear about school being over in a little while and you finally being able to semi-relax once it does!

I think that this topic is beyond my expertize.

Quote:
Canada became the third country to confirm human cases of swine flu Sunday as global health officials considered whether to raise the global pandemic alert level.

Nations from New Zealand to Spain also reported suspected cases and some warned citizens against travel to North America while others planned quarantines, tightened rules on pork imports and tested airline passengers for fevers.

Nova Scotia's chief public health officer, Dr. Robert Strang, said the east coast Canadian province had confirmed four "very mild" cases of swine flu in students ranging in age from 12 to 17 or 18. All are recovering, he said.

"It was acquired in Mexico, brought home and spread," Strang said.

The western province of British Columbia confirmed two further cases.

The news follows the World Health Organization's decision Saturday to declare the outbreak first detected in Mexico and the United States a "public health emergency of international concern."

A senior World Health Organization official said the agency's emergency committee will meet for a second time Tuesday to examine the extent to which the virus has spread before deciding whether to increase the pandemic alert beyond phase 3.

The same strain of the A/H1N1 swine flu virus has been detected in several locations in Mexico and the United States, and it appears to be spreading directly from human to human, said Keiji ***uda, WHO's assistant director-general in charge of health security.

Mexico's health minister says the disease has killed up to 86 people and likely sickened up to 1,400 since April 13. U.S. officials say the virus has been found in New York, California, Texas, Kansas and Ohio, but so far no fatalities have been reported.

Governments including China, Russia and Taiwan began planning to put anyone with symptoms of the deadly virus under quarantine

Others were increasing their screening of pigs and pork imports from the Americas or banning them outright despite health officials' reassurances that it was safe to eat thoroughly cooked pork.

Some nations issued travel warnings for Mexico and the United States.

WHO's emergency committee is still trying to determine exactly how the virus has spread, ***uda said

"Right now we have cases occurring in a couple of different countries and in multiple locations," he said. "But we also know that in the modern world that cases can simply move around from single locations and not really become established."

Raising the pandemic alert phase could entail issuing specific recommendations to countries on how to halt the disease. So far, WHO has only urged governments to step up their surveillance of suspicious outbreaks.

WHO Director-General Margaret Chan called the outbreak a public health emergency of "pandemic potential" because the virus can pass from human to human.

Her agency was considering whether to issue nonbinding recommendations on travel and trade restrictions, and even border closures. It is up to governments to decide whether to follow the advice.

"Countries are encouraged to do anything that they feel would be a precautionary measure," WHO spokeswoman Aphaluck Bhatiasevi said. "All countries need to enhance their monitoring."

New Zealand said that 10 students who took a school trip to Mexico "likely" had swine flu. Israel said a man who had recently visited Mexico had been hospitalized while authorities try to determine whether he had the disease. French Health Ministry officials investigated four possible cases of swine flu, but three were later found to be negative.

Spanish authorities said a total of seven suspected cases were under observation.

Hong Kong and Taiwan said visitors who came back from flu-affected areas with fevers would be quarantined. China said anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms within two weeks of arrival from an affected area had to report to authorities. A Russian health agency said any passenger from North America running a fever would be quarantined until the cause of the fever is determined.

Tokyo's Narita airport installed a device to test the temperatures of passengers arriving from Mexico.

Indonesia increased surveillance at all entry points for travelers with flu-like symptoms — using devices at airports that were put in place years ago to monitor for severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, and bird flu. It said it was ready to quarantine suspected victims if necessary.

Hong Kong and South Korea warned against travel to the Mexican capital and three affected provinces. Italy, Poland and Venezuela also advised their citizens to postpone travel to affected areas of Mexico and the United States.

Symptoms of the flu-like illness include a fever of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius), body aches, coughing, a sore throat, respiratory congestion and, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhea.

The virus is usually contracted through direct contact with pigs, but Joseph Domenech, chief of animal health service at U.N. Food and Agriculture Agency in Rome, said all indications were that the virus is being spread through human-to-human transmission.

No vaccine specifically protects against swine flu, and it is unclear how much protection current human flu vaccines might offer.

Russia banned the import of meat products from Mexico, California, Texas and Kansas. South Korea said it would increase the number of its influenza virus checks on pork products from Mexico and the U.S.

Absolutely though I've been procrastinating with friends a lot more than working lately. On Thursday, friends and I had a picnic in the park behind one of the residence halls and this evening, two of them got dressed up and roped me and another friend into getting dressed up to take pictures in the park. So random.

Aw, that picnic sounds really pleasant. And fun! You definitely deserve a little (or more, hee) procrastination.

Dressed up as in...like dresses? Or a costume? Either way, very random indeed, heh.

It really was fun. 20 pictures in here. I'm curious to know what you see in the clouds. BTW: I'm in the one above the clouds pic. And my friends are from left to right in the picture above that one is Lucy (aka Carolyn), Carolyn (see why we nicknamed the other Carolyn "Lucy"?), Andrea, and Liona.

Yeah, dresses though Liona wore a nice top and pants instead of a dress. The one friend from the picnic that didn't join us for the dress up in the park thing was Carolyn.

Edit: Oh look Liona's already posted some pics on Facebook. 1 2 3 4 5 6 (The last one is after I took a picture of Andrea taking a picture of Lucy & Liona 'cause Andrea then wanted to take a picture of my picture on the screen. That's why there's the weird head tilt.)

Hee, lots of smiles and laughs. Looks great, Gaby! Coldish, though? It ain't quite summer yet, heh, but man does it look like it sometimes. We're so close!

Clouds, hmm. I feel like like I'm in a psychological experiment, hee, but I see a face on the left, where the big bulk of the clouds are. Like, the biggest cloud is the hair, then there's two little eyes underneath, a nose and little curly mouth!

I see a face lying down (biggest cloud) and then like a hand on the chin in thought, but you can't see the rest of the body, heh.

I totally can't see it, but I think that's mostly because I can't see anything else other than the silly face I'm seeing, hee.

Did your friends see the same thing as you?

Random remembrance of Friday that I forgot to mention: on the very last day of school, after the last time I needed take the bus to school, my U-Pass (which is a really great deal of a transit pass that is almost surely the cheapest in the region; you'll love this Thief) broke in half. Somehow. It's never happened before. It's like the pass knew that I would never need to use it again, so it decided to self destruct, hee.

Funny Jay Leno monologue last night. True story: A young Canadian couple were found having sex in a dumster.

Jay: How messy could that guy's room be if he told his girl not to come over...but to meet him at the dumpster!

Jay: Now that's what I'd call white trash!

I just want to state that that couple by no means represents Canada, heh, 'cause ew much? Just...why???

Nothing much going on here. Ankle is pretty much back to normal, but I still don't want to risk injuring it while it's still healing. How's everyone else doing?

Oh, and I'm working on a new Giant Post of Introversion, so it's only a matter of time! Which, uh, knowing my pace, is still quite a matter, indeed, heh.

Well, at least you're making progress on it! I look forward to reading it next month.

Hee, weird coincidence with your U-Pass. I had read about that program in all the UBC literature, incidentally, and it sounds awesomely convenient and inexpensive. 'Cause public transportation is going to be my friend for quite a bit of the foreseeable future, heh.

Didn't go in for work at the library this morning because I'm a bit paranoid at the moment; we're pretty close to one of the swine flu outbreak regions (a town just fifteen or twenty miles from where we live), and Fiesta just finished a few days ago, which is sort of like a South Texas/Mexican culture version of Mardi Gras, and usually includes a lot of tourists coming up from Mexico, so...yeah. Not a good time right now to be hanging out in big public places in San Antonio, I'm thinking, heh.

Oh, but on a happier and less, uh, paranoid note: I mentioned (in one of the Giant Posts) the guy whom I've known since we were three, and his married, professor older brother? Well, the older brother's officially going to be a father at some point today or tomorrow, depending on how much longer the delivery takes, heh. So my mother's been getting calls from his mother with updates on everything, so that's been fun. Probably moreso for us than for the mom-to-be, hee.
