Hilarie was fantastic in her scenes but the unrealistic part was Peyton jumping straight to cocaine. That hardly ever happens. I know it is debatable whether or not weed is a gateway drug in a true way since weed has proven to be beneficial for many with health conditions and it's far less dangerous than alcohol. That said, typically people don't jump to coke. While I found it realistic that someone like Peyton would turn to drugs, I wish we would have seen her drinking excessively, smoking some pot before jumping to cocaine.

You?

Was definitely pretty dumb, but I hated how quickly got dropped once Jake came back.

Should have found a way to link it to Ellie coming into the show imo.

How would you describe the relationship between Haley and Nathan comparing to Lucas and Peyton?

I agree with you completely. I still despise how Lucas called Jake. It should have been Lucas helping Peyton.

Yes, not linking to Ellie was such a missed opportunity.

Definitely, didn't make a lot of sense for Jake to suddenly fix it considering their friendship in S1 wasn't all that deep imo. Plus her issues suddenly disappearing after he came back is pretty problematic imo.

Sure was, would have been great to see her and Peyton onscreen before the truth came out.

I don't know either. LOL. They did have an emotional connection, I just don't know how to compare it to Lucas and Peyton.

Agreed. It was dumb and irritating. Like you said, they didn't have a deep friendship in S1 at all.

I personally didnt hate the drug storyline. i know a lot of people did but it didnt get too deep or annoying, and I liked the emotional pull for Peyton.

They could have done it a lot better though. She could have slowly progressed into doing it, then did it more than one time to really kinda gut punch the audience. But it was so fast and quick and over with so it wasnt really a big deal imo.

Sophia had a nice voice for a while but at some point it got way too raspy, I think in season 5? IDK, it was like she was putting it on... Its not like that anymore lol.

I think the big difference between the two is although chemistry is subjective, I never thought Chad and Sophia had major chemistry (the story for Brooke and Lucas was poor so that might have played a part) yet I watched one scene between Nina and Ian and they lit up the screen with amazing chemistry. So I might have done the same thing you did with TVD!
This is the thing about TVD too, it wasnt just the chemistry with nina/ian which was great (even after they split up it was still there, where as with chad/sophia you could visibly see how awkward it was with them) but damon/elena were written really well. Like, from season 1 they built up damons feelings for elena and it was constant. She didnt reciprocate but you could see her very slowly starting to fall for him. End of season 1, she def was starting to become attracted to him when Stefan went off the rails a bit. Season 2 it continued to build and by season 3 you could tell she was interested. but they really took their time with it, and it felt natural. (BL literally got togehtr so freaking fast ridic...) Then, once DE got together, it was always damon for elena. She never went back and had feelings for stefan again. Stefan wasnt lingering in the background. They really put stefan/elena into the friendzone and remained there. Then we saw a relatoionship with stefan/caroline develop for multiple seasons and that was his best and strongest relationship. so much stronger than elena/stefan imo.

Unlike on dawsons creek for example or one tree hill where it went back and forth between the triangle, it didnt do that on tvd. Once they went with DE it didnt change. If they had gone BACK to stefan/elena again i wouldnt have been able to support DE after that.

And on the other hand had they built up B/L for 3 seasons and showed them really falling for one another it would be a completely different story. But their relaitonship was unhealthy, toxic, and awful!

Also, S/E where written so blase imo. Dont get me wrong, they were a sweet couple but there was never any fire there? It was too easy for them. They literally kissed in episode 2 and then were practically together right away in the series. For me, I am all about angst and build up. YOu will be able to tell what ships I am into based purely on that. I have to have build up. I CANNOT ship a couple that gets together in the first 2 episodes. Probably why I wasnt that into Naley, they happened too fast for me. I equate Stefan/Elena to Naley. Dont hate tem by any means and they have cute moments (I actually adore stefan) but the build up was non existent.

I mean if you look at my pairings, Leyton, Jate, Delena, Steroline, DJo.... all of them have build up and angst/drama. Which is fun to watch.

Just seemed like they went there to justify Brooke/Lucas

I always got the impression that the writers intended to do more with the drug storyline before they made JP a thing in order to justify BL 2.0.

I guess the way to describe it is Lucas and Peyton had an intellectual meeting of the minds, emotional connection...

Nathan and Haley were emotionally connected but not intellectually, not in the way that Lucas and Peyton were.

Brooke and Lucas were the anti-intellectual, anti-emotional connection. LOL.

YES! 100%!

The first time I saw Jake and Peyton in S1 interacting that is what I thought... okay, they will put Peyton temporarily with Jake because toxic superficial, ridiculous, Brooke and Lucas will do their thing and nauseate anyone with a clue knowing it should be Lucas and Peyton instead... but for a while Peyton will hang with Jake so Brooke and Lucas can be horrific together. Then it happened later once again when the network wanted to do Brooke and Lucas for a second time due to Chad and Sophia together for two seconds.

So yes, to me, Peyton and Jake were ALWAYS there to justify Brooke and Lucas. It was obvious. It was lame.

Exactly. If you are going to do a serious storyline like this one, you progress it slowly so that audience can take in what is going on every step of the way. This storyline felt like it always wanted to be done before it got started. The meat of the storyline seemed to be missing.

See Amy Abbott S2 Depression storyline. Emily was magical and the writers started Amy's depression in S1! We saw her endure panic attacks before dancing, hugging Ephram in school and acting like she didn't have a clue what was going on, etc. When Amy developed clinical, situational depression the audience knew she was having issues with her mental health back in S1! The build up was beautiful and we witnessed it every step of the way. It also didn't end overnight in S2 once it became clear what was going on either. It took nearly 2/3rds of S2 for Amy to balance things out and start feeling healthier.

What a great summary and breakdown comparing other pairings I know so it's very easy for me to understand DE versus SE and DE in general. It really makes sense to me. I need the slow build up and angst as well... look at Ephram and Amy... talk about build up and slowly getting there. Same with Rory and Jess on Gilmore Girls too... they developed a friendship first (connection via books, writing) and then they had a romantic relationship. Even after breaking up they intellectually connect (their intellectual, emotional bond is 100% there long-term!) and it's clear during that last moment of Gilmore Girls in the revival Jess is to Rory what Luke is to Lorelai.

Yes, build up and believability is a must.
