Well, I don't know if this is controversial, but I think that killing Keith was the single biggest mistake that the show made. Having Dan kill Keith not only killed off a great character and a positive role model for Lucas and Nathan, but it made Dan irredeemable. Dan had always been a villain, but when he murdered his own brother, that pushed his character beyond the point of no return, and even though attempts were made in the subsequent seasons to redeem him, too much damage had been done.

Hard to disagree and despite it me thinking (albeit reluctantly) added something to the show, it definitely was an mistake for that to happen at the hands of Dan. I doubt that this event would have happened if the show was in danger of get cancelled at the end of season 3 though. What other mistakes do you think the show made?

I think that some of the story lines were ridiculously melodramatic, like the Psycho Derek story line, the Nanny Carrie story line and the Nathan kidnapping story line, and let's not forget the dog eating the heart that Dan was supposed to get! I also thought that Nanny Carrie kidnapping first Jamie and then Dan was ridiculously over the top. One Tree Hill started out as a drama about two bothers, and it was good in its early seasons from what I've heard but as time went on I feel the story lines became ridiculous, and like many shows of this type the show eventually became a caricature of itself.

They were just an little bit melodramatic Most of the storylines weren't that great too and played an big part in why the show dropped quality in the later seasons. It also didn't help that it went on for seasons after LP left and Mark & the writers has basically run out of stories to tell with core characters.

I think that most shows of this type eventually run out of ideas and it especially happens when shows are set in High School and the characters graduate. I think that it was a good idea to skip the college years and have the characters be close to age of the actors who played them, but I think that somewhere along the way the show lost its heart.
