County High Cafeteria #96 (General OT): Why are there so many stupid updates on phones and computers? Leave us alone, updates!

Thanks for the new thread Michelle!

Love the tile and how we honor the annoying software "features".

I see what you mean.

But have you ever heard of the battery literally draining after an update and continuing to do so unless you reset/restart phone? That's seriously happened to me.
Yes, I have. Does your phones has the option to kill all active processes? If it continues to drain battery after the update it means one of those two things:

1. The new application drains the battery. You can see this if you can check your battery usage. It will be shown.
2. Some system process caused by the update causes drainage. You will see this again in the battery usage but as system usage and not some application.

My guess is the second one. Restarting the phone kills all active processes. Now why it happens? Either the application is written badly or it's a bug in the OS of the phone.

You figured it out! Yes, my phone has the option to kill all active processes and it's the main way to fix it. You're bang on, Senior Software Developer, that's precisely what happens!

This is what I thought as well. To be honest I don't use smartphones the way people do it. I don't check my emails there or use some type of communication application like viber/facebook etc. I do like to figure out how the things work there though . That's more interesting for me.

Btw this applies for Android phones as well if someone sees battery drainage.

Thanks for the new thread Michelle!

It’s also amazing how Smart Phone Manufacturers have people conditioned to want a new phone every year. The phone I have now has way more capabilities than I’ll ever need, so I intend to keep it for at least a few more years. The only real improvement I saw between my Samsung Galaxy S3 and my Samsung Galaxy S7 is the camera. The S3 took so-so pictures but the S7 takes excellent pictures. I’m not a camera person so it’s a real benefit for me for those times when I do take pictures.

Buying new phone every year is a bit too much for me too. I have changed my phones in two years but that was because of the rapid development of Android. IMO Android 5 is quite stable version and I don't see meaningful improvements for me in 6 and 7 for example. The so called Battery optimization in Android 6 is a total disaster. There is nothing that beneficial in those versions.

I change phones for two reasons - either the battery drains too fast (I do not want to charge my phone everyday that's not a good option for me) or the CPU/RAM can't handle the new applications. Unfortunately that's how manufacturers actually make people buying new phones. They make the applications in a way that work on your phone, but are really really slow.

My previous phone had 512 MB RAM and it was really hard to work with the applications it had. When I was looking for phone most were either 3 GB or 2 GB. There were some with more but they were too expensive and just like you I don't want to pay too much for phone. So I chose mine that has 2 GB. Given the fact that phone size matters me I had no other choice but find a one with 2 GB RAM.

I was interested however if 2 GB RAM is really OK so I installed application that tells me how much of my RAM is consumed. It turned out that's around 1 GB so I have 1 free which told me that I should expect my phone to work well enough for at least 2 or 3 years.

I'm not a camera person too so I tend to not care that much about the camera on my phone. I care about battery life the most and size.

Interesting. Why don't you check emails or communication applications? I am going to learn something new here, lol.

It's Software Developers' humor .

I have two types of email. Work email and personal one. I don't think that my life would end if I don't check my personal email while I'm outside for example. I have the email application, but if I check this means that I'm bored out of my mind.

Work email is to be checked when I'm at work. Not when I'm outside via my phone. Unless I'm in a meeting the whole day and I want to check the emails. In this case however I would bring my laptop and check my work email there.

I do not chat via phone. If someone wants to tell me something urgent they better call me. For everything else skype me and I will answer when I'm at home. And that's it.

I use GPS mostly when it comes to the Smartphone's features. Or local transport application for schedules and tracking. Also some general tools that make my life easier. Like female periods tracking or stomach issues tracking. Stuff like that. Oh also weather application.

Got it! I was thinking maybe you thought there was danger/risk to checking those things using a Smartphone. Not the case, right?

The old phones weren't that secure, but the new ones are. However I wouldn't put sensitive information in my phone because still someone might steel it. Unfortunately there is always risk for that so I think that people should be careful. I also would never add applications related to bank accounts, credit cards etc because again someone might steal my phone. You never know. Certain things are not to be there IMO.

I guess I'm not that smart phone dependent. Again if I'm bored I could check out my phone regularly but that's because I'm bored. I've actually forgotten my phone not once or twice at home and I could spend the whole day like that and have no problems at all. And btw for this period no one would text me or call me. I don't talk on the phone that much and in general I use it really when it's really needed. Like I'm lost on the streets (could happen) or want to check the local transportation. I am not into taking pictures, I am not into chatting, I am not into listening to music from my phone or stuff like that.

I have an old phone that I use for music. I listen to music too much anyway and I prefer to have separate dedicated device for that.

Overall I am not your typical user of Smartphone. As weird as it sounds because I'm into Software Development, new technologies and all that, but honestly I know that smartphones have too many options that I simply don't need or use.

I’m still much more of a computer person than a Smart Phone person. I check Fan Forum and Facebook on my computer and I very rarely check them on my Smart Phone. I tried using Forum Runner for a while to check Fan Forum but it didn’t work very well. I would never try to access the Control Panel here through my Smart Phone. I have to access the Control Panel every day to approve new members (we have to manually approve members because otherwise we’d be flooded with spam registrations) and I also have to appoint and remove moderators and Moderator Support Team Members in the Control Panel. I also have to run a script in the Control Panel to do the post counts once a month and transfer all that information into Excel and Word. There’s a lot more that goes on behind the scenes here that I have to do than people realize, and I have to do it all on my computer.

Yes, I actually really don't check my email on my Smart Phone much either. Then again, I constantly forget to check my personal email on my laptop and desktop too. Work email obviously I have to be on top of, especially working from home so often.

Wow, Jerry, there certainly is! That has to be very difficult for you working a full time job (at times with a boss that gets too intense and demanding, other colorful co-workers) and then having big time responsibilities here at Fan Forum. I suppose you dedicate a ton of time at home for Fan Forum.

ETA: So cute... I've been posting on the board, answering pms, and Buddy's getting so restless because he knows it's time to play. He's sitting next to me, trying to get my attention, softly barking even to get me to stop with the computer and go play with him.

Yes, I spend several hours a day doing work for Fan Forum. Sunday is my busiest day because that's when I appoint and remove moderators, do the weekly post counts, and change moderator user names once a month.

Aww, that's adorable! Goldie will jump up on me at the computer to get my attention!

That's what I figured.

So cute! Does she follow you around room to room or pretty much gets very enthusiastic when you get home?
