Thanks for the new thread, Patricia.

Clever e-mail I received today...

Bar Stool Economics

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers, he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?' They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.!

And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28% savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).

Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

'I only got a dollar out of the $20,'declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!'

'Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!'

'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'

'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

Thanks for the new thread.

Interesting e-mail, Betty.

TFTNT!

Betty, I love the E-mail even if I pass my taxes off yearly to my math whiz/scientist sister to do them for stupid-at-math, me... although I know that's not the point. LOL.

everwoodfan52 05-11-2011 07:14 PM

The point is not politically correct...but it is something to think about.

BepperGirl 05-11-2011 07:23 PM

It may be just me being a math nerd, but I would have split it this way:

the first four = free
the fifth = $0.80
the sixth = $2.40
the seventh = $5.60
the eighth = $10.80
the ninth = $14.40
the tenth = $47.20

Everyone would pay 80% of what they originally paid. But I guess there would still be grumbling about how the tenth got $11.80 out of the $20 and the fifth got $0.20 out of the $20.

They're never going to be happy.

Dude, somehow I knew you would start working the numbers with that.

BepperGirl 05-11-2011 08:48 PM

I'm predictable.

We should have an AIM chat tomorrow night or Sunday, perhaps?

everwoodfan52 05-18-2011 12:05 PM

I hope you got your AIM chat, Gaby. :)

Now I ask all of you: How could Arnold cheat on beautiful Maria Schriver with this woman?

BepperGirl 05-18-2011 12:43 PM

Nope.

Ahnold is so ridiculous, tsk tsk.

So my left hand has been partially numb since Monday. (Pinky/little finger and the side of the ring finger closer to the pinky/little finger.) I went to see the doctor today. I'm being referred to a specialist for a nerve conduction study. That's in two weeks. Hopefully it isn't serious. Google doesn't seem to think it's carpal tunnel since that affects the thumb, index, and middle fingers.

Just wanted to keep you guys updated since this thread hasn't been posted on in a while aside from Betty's post just now ;)

Michelle!! Hop to that.

Gaby, I noticed your absence on this thread. I hope the doctors get to the bottom of your hand.

Taryn74 05-18-2011 04:34 PM

Man, I had not seen pics of that woman yet. The whole thing is just sad. Pathetic kind of sad.

jediwands 05-18-2011 05:03 PM

Oh man, I'm sorry about not seeing this thread until some mod I'm friends with bluntly let me know to get my a$$ over here to check it out. Lol.

Gaby, AIM sounds awesome! When are you free?

Also? I sort of know a thing or two about nerve issues. I have carpal tunnel in both wrists (sports related) and I recently had an EMG done on my left shoulder/arm because of numbness and tingling that I am getting down my arm and into my hand. The neuro wanted to rule out anything trapped higher up than the carpal tunnel. I turned out having carpal tunnel, again, and no other compressions in the shoulder/arm specifically. My diagnosis is more shoulder/neck spasms pinching on the nerves up high into the head and neck causing my symptoms down the arm and hand. Again, sports related. I'm a mess from head to toe due to that soccer and basketball but oh well. Lol.

Anyway, I do know what can affect those fingers you speak of... look up Ulnar Nerve Entrapment:

Ulnar Nerve Entrapment - Your Orthopaedic Connection - AAOS

This could be your issue. :)

Maria Schriver was too good for Arnold. I am so glad she split with him. What a tool. She is a strong Catholic and now I can see why it's being revealed how he tested her faith. Just slightly. :irked:

BepperGirl 05-18-2011 05:30 PM

Thanks for the advice, Michelle, re: my hand! I have come across that and also Guyon's Canal Syndrome. Re: AIM, how does this Friday sound? Saturday may be a possibility, but it may not. (Birthday party for a young cousin in the afternoon and then laundry at Dad's.) I'm finishing up homework due tomorrow night at 11:59pm and may need the night tomorrow to complete it (thank goodness the Thursday shows I'm obsessed over had their finales last week).
