Decided to put the episode up early. I watched yesterday. I think it put me in a bad mood (seeing Madison).

Thoughts coming soon and looking forward to everyone's thoughts!

My Thoughts.....

Poor Amy. I still believe that Harold should not have told her.

Andy, stop thinking about Amanda.

I'm wondering if Andy had told Ephram's about the pregnancy before his audition if the **** would not have hit the fan as violently and Ephram would have gone through with his audition. We will never know.

How is Ephram not going to worry when Amy says that her head is not in a good place and she will explain when he gets back. That would certainly make me worry.

Harold is in good shape!

Grumpy Irv...didn't miss him. At least he realizes that he screwed up.
Where is Irv's office? Isn't it in his home with Edna? If he is sleeping in his office then he really didn't move out of his house.

Poor Ephram is so happy and excited. I never noticed the girlfriend's boyfriend coming out of a coma connection before. Yes! Ephram can certainly relate.

You've got to love Bright. He knows how to make lemonade out of lemons. Everyone should be able to bounce back from adversity and not wallow in depression the way that he does. We should take lessons from this guy.

Does Edna love Irv more than she loved Hal Sr? She practically admitted it.

The Brown men both in their element...Ephram walking down the halls of Julliard and Andy walking down the hospital corridor. Super Cool!

"I'm Ok." What an understatement. Ephram was so "into" his playing that he didn't even notice that a huge audience had gathered around him.

Madison. Unfortunately random.

Hearing girls tell Bright that he is not the kind of guy a girl wants to settle down with is definitely an eye opener for him.

The only person thrilled that Madison bumped into Ephram is Ephram.

You have to feel a little sorry for Madison here. She did need Andy's help when she came to him after finding out she was pregnant. Of course she should have told Ephram's first.

Why didn't Andy tell Madison to hold the news from Ephram until after his audition? That would have been very helpful.

Amy is Super Chick!

Hmmmmmm...Bright misses Hannah. Amy noticed.

Irv is definitely an excellent writer.

The balcony scene is so lovely and yet so hearbreaking at the same time. The Browns have finally become a family and all the progress is just going to blow up in everyone's face.

The first thing that grabbed me was hearing Irv narrating once again. The Irv voice-overs are always gold. Secondly, Michael Green is my favorite writer on the series not named Greg Berlanti. He just “gets” these characters and Everwood in general so my eyes always light up knowing Michael Green is in charge putting pen to paper if Berlanti doesn't go there.

As for characters, the first thing I noticed was Amy visibly wearing the Infinity necklace Ephram gave her. It’s all about the little things. I think this was a quiet reminder that no matter what, Ephram and Amy will make it. Watching Amy looking so conflicted and sad literally pisses me off. It angers me during this rewatch having to see her tortured once again. It is ridiculous she finds out such vile news yet has to only think of Ephram. Sure, it demonstrates love which I will get to but overall, I am sorry, it sucks once again Amy has to deal with shock and heartache. Let's see... at the beginning of the season Ephram returns from NYC all distant because he wasn't mature enough to talk to her about his fears over piano and getting a bad review. Madison band lie happens right after they sleep together for the first time. Next is finding out from Harold that Ephram got an adult babysitter pregnant a year and change in the past and instead of getting to talk to Ephram about this immediately, she has to keep quiet because she is putting Ephram first. How does Ephram eventually repay her? Dumping her, laughing in her face about seeing a forever and it takes a while for her to trust him again. But we will get to that later. Still, I cannot help but put it all together inside my mind as I finished watching this episode and tie everything together. Amazing how so many years later I am still passionate and emotional when it comes to this series. I take that as a good sign. Everwood will always remain in the heart Eternally.

Harold giving Andy the resignation letter was startling. It made sense Harold was very conflicted because he felt he violated Andy's confidence which is totally Harold. But the resignation seemed a tad over the top. He is a 50-50 partner with Andy even if Andy saved the day as they became equal partners in the first place. I guess it is Harold to go to the extreme though. I like how Harold gave Andy the advice of telling Ephram and was glad Andy wasn't mad at Harold for telling Amy. Harold did point out that he is partially the reason Andy never told Ephram from the start since he instructed him not to. Yes, that is very true. It doesn't get talked about a lot. Harold literally played a massive part in all of this... he instructed Andy not to tell Ephram at the beginning of S3 because he witnessed Ephram and Amy truly in love. Andy listened to Harold. Andy was about to tell Ephram! Then Harold decides to tell Amy the truth at the worst time he could have decided to go there as it put both Amy and Andy in a terrible position. Harold really needs to receive a ton of blame. Sure, Andy let him in on the secret from the beginning but Andy did tell Harold he was telling Ephram and Harold stopped him then went ahead and told Amy almost making it seem like Andy never wanted to tell Ephram this entire time which simply isn't true. Harold definitely is to blame for some of this. So much so, it might have even helped had Harold gone to Ephram after they returned from NYC and explained to Ephram that his father was ready to tell him but Harold stopped him because of the love he had for his daughter and the Ephram and Amy love in general. I wonder if Harold would have gone there and told Ephram his part in all of this if Ephram might have been less angry with Andy.

I didn't love the Ephram and Amy goodbye before Ephram went off to NYC to enter a hell on earth. I wanted a kiss between them instead of a hug but considering Amy was a mess internally (and Greg and Emily giving infections back and forth to each other throughout all of S3) it makes sense. I wonder why Ephram did not persist in trying to find out what Amy wanted to tell him. I think this was an indirect way to make Amy's situation even more devastating because of course Ephram does not remember this conversation with Amy after Madisongate explodes. At the very least, he could have remembered that she was planning on telling him about Madison immediately after he returned from NYC. But it did not happen because Amy was meant to be burned once again.

Edna and Irv are very cute, and I loved their bantering and bickering. Very cruel of the writers to flirt with a break up, then ignore the outcome for many episodes (thanks, Amanda) and finally show them reunited but not after some humor and drama between them. Oh well, at least it was a good outcome, they reunited, Irv realized his home was always meant to be with Edna, and Irv completed his book.

Bright trying to make things right with all the past women that he screwed over was nice to see. Now we know that his apology to Jillian was real. I didn't love that smirk on his face as he was leaving her house even so but it is great seeing him trying to do the right thing overall and work on his life. We know what happens later with Hannah but for right now, his heart is in the right place. The conversation he had with Amy was total foreshadowing that he will be with Hannah in the future and he wanted to take Hannah out that night. Kind of surprised he didn't realize something was up with his sister, however. Ephram didn't seem to realize it very much either though. Poor Amy. But it was so obvious Bright realized he had feelings for Hannah in this episode alone based on wanting to see Hannah that night.

The Ephram and Amy phone call... as Ephram tells Amy he bumped into Madison you could see Amy's hand shaking. Emily, you are award-winning. Amy was so upset that this might ruin his Juilliard audition. The best news to come out of his conversation was hearing Ephram tell Amy that he has zero feelings for Madison anymore and it was like running into a cousin. I think given the disgusting Madison band lie, Ephram getting her number, telling Andy he wanted to call her it was nice to hear Ephram confirm that he feels nothing for Madison anymore. The audience deserved to hear this, especially since once again Amy was in the dark and didn't fully understand the full extent of what was going on with the Madison band lie. At least the bottom line is Ephram 100% understands he feels nothing for the witch, the former babysitter, the idiot, the moron, the dark energy that resides in and around Everwood from the moment she appeared in S2. Amy's "I Love You" to Ephram melted my heart. I only wish Ephram would have remembered all of this after Madison does the unthinkable. I also wish Ephram would have told Amy he loved her too. I found that strange he never said it back.

The roof scene between Andy and Ephram was heartbreaking. Everything is going to crumble in their relationship. EVERYTHING. It is sad to witness this knowing the outcome. And for Ephram to ask Andy to move back to NYC with him? Heartbreaking. To see how much Ephram finally loves Andy and isn't afraid to show it anymore, is so gut-wrenching because it's going to be ALL OVER (temporarily)... Everything they worked for since the beginning of S1 will be temporarily destroyed. To see Amy clutching that note that Ephram gave her as she knows how Ephram, her true love, is going to be turned upside down in just a short while... Amy doesn't deserve this. It is awful watching it all play out.

NYC is where this is all going to explode. It is poetic in that Ephram will never look at NYC the same way again. That is what I think the title of the episode, A Mountain Town, is all about. NYC will now represent heartbreak for Ephram... the death of his mother, never knowing his father, blowing his audition, finding out the truth from Madison and the deception that both she and Andy displayed against him... he had good moments with Amy at the end of S2 there but everything else as a rule was awful. As we see in this episode, it is all going to come crashing down and outside of ten wonderful days with Amy the past summer, NYC will represent nothing short of darkness for Ephram. Everwood will forever be his hope, where he will heal from all of this... In Everwood.. A "Mountain Town."

This episode was all about a connection to the very beginning. I felt that from the moment the series started until the black screen of this episode. This episode felt like a combination of the Pilot and Home mixed together. Michael Green did not disappoint, like always.

Regarding the infuriating Andy/Madison meeting...

I know that so many had issues with the slim chance meeting between Ephram and Madison. But the thing is, Irv is talking FATE immediately in his wonderful voice-over. I am a very Spiritual person so this doesn't seem unrealistic to me in the least. Not just due to Spirituality but how Irv spells it out for us. When there's fate involved, anything and everything happens.

Andy Brown had tons of FATE to welcome (or not) throughout this entire season. I strongly believe it was Andy Brown's destiny to go back to NYC, where he lost his wife, where he never knew his children, where he worked himself crazy and barely even cared about his patients and have everything he built with his son in Everwood up until this point blow right up in his face. I truly believe this based on the story and how it was constructed. I can hate it, and I do, but it still makes sense.

Having said all of that... Andy was quietly begging Madison to "do the right thing." I don't think he was completely resigned or even assuming that Madison was going to spill everything right before the audition. I actually think he was, in a round about way, trying to request that she wait until after the audition. Like how he said she will have better instincts than he did, etc. I think he was creating hints for her to digest his request. I think in some way, Andy felt like if he got on his hands and knees and begged her to wait until after the audition, due to the cat and mouse game, what would Madison do? TELL Ephram the moment she saw him. Madison would probably even have taken Andy's begging as barking "MORE ORDERS" and told Ephram right away like the witch did. In a strange way, I think Andy was banking on a silent request of conveying to her that she wait. He might have thought it was his only hope to get through to her. Two things, unfortunately... we have FATE and we have a horrible, vile person named Madison who illegally had sex with Andy's minor son after being employed by Andy, not listening to Andy telling them not to date, he begged her not to hurt him, and even gets pregnant as a way to go against Andy's wishes. This is on Madison yet she is so vile, she was always going to blame Andy for everything. Always. Always. She only told Ephram when she did because she's vile and wanted to stick it to Andy, it wasn't about ever doing the right thing primarily. How does her history in any way tell us she was ever gong to do the right thing? Why would she go there now?

What Amy feels for Ephram is the precise definition of true love. She loves him in every way that is possible to love someone. The way she has handled this news is nothing short of perfection. The unselfish love that she displays towards Ephram is something to see. I loved how Ephram was telling her about feeling nothing romantically for Madison and Amy was barely even listening to that part of it. Her focus was on EPHRAM and making sure he does not blow his audition. Her concern about Ephram seeing Madison is purely out of Amy wanting Ephram to get through his audition in one piece... with suceess. The demonstration of what defines loving someone is what Amy displayed towards Ephram. Which is why this love story simply touches me in a way that no other on the small or large screen has ever even come close to doing so. And Amy clutching that note that Ephram wrote in the care package broke my heart. I will soon be very disappointed in Ephram and how he handles things later but for sure, I just love Amy and this is why she is my favorite character and always has been. I also love the Ephram and Amy love story even if there are moments I am highly annoyed by Ephram's behavior. Sometimes Amy, but way more Ephram, especially after they officially get together at the end of S2. It is like from S1 - S2 it was Amy who did some thoughtless things while she was upset over the Colin situation but once the end of S2 hit, and they got together, Amy was ALL in. It was Ephram screwing up (returning from NYC upset and closed off, Madison band lie, breaking up with Amy) until he got very lucky Amy was able to forgive and reunite for good at the end of S4. The bottom line though is the Eprham and Amy connection received many challenges and they had endless moments where it appeared is if things were too tough to handle... but not a chance. Their connection was too strong. Harold was right at the beginning of S3... they have true love. That is very true, which is why they could have handled Ephram finding out at the beginning of S3 when Andy wanted to tell him. But... fate got in the way. They will be fine. That is the beauty of Ephram and Amy. They always find each other.

Last Thoughts:

- Madison told Andy she was broke while pregnant, etc.. Well, did she look as if she was flat broke? Not at all. Quite the opposite. Also, if someone doesn't have money why do they move to NYC? It's impossible unless you are living in really poor conditions. She has no money but decides to live in one of the most expensive cities in the world. She's a complete idiot. And liar.

- Does Rose know yet? Rose was involved with Edna and Irv but it astounds me she has no idea what is going on with babygate, even after Harold told Amy.

- Irv told Harold he had moved out of his and Edna's house a month ago and was mostly sleeping in his office. What office? Isn't his only office in the house?

- Trump Plaza. I swear, Everwood is intuitive.

- Another Abbott dinner... Irv's editor friend looked like a professional woman. Edna attacked her verbally and even Harold made a sarcastic comment about Irv moving on so quickly. I wish she would have told them both to shove it. LOL. Irv should have immediately said as much and explained who she was as well. It all turned out beautifully but still, this moment was very tense and should have been cleared up immediately.

- I did love Harold and Irv meeting at the fitness center. I wish it was under happier circumstances but I loved the scene because we never get these two alone minus sprinkles in S1.

- Are we supposed to believe Delia is that comfortable talking about Andy/Amanda? I find this very out of character. Not too long ago Delia wanted Julia to help her with girl/woman things. Yet she was fine with her father dating a married woman who has a husband once severely neurologically impaired? I just don't buy it.

- Seeing Madison's mug was like seeing darkness. She represents trouble, turmoil and darkness, nothing more.

- Andy and Ephram and how excited they are together, you can tell NYC native Treat was having a blast. That rooftop scene is so heartbreaking. It is a scene I can only watch again if forced to like this rewatch. Otherwise, I would never watch just for the fun of it.

- Andy noticing the surgeon friend not having time for regular life was quite telling. Andy, you belong in Everwood. Understand this 100% without any shred of doubt.

- Poor Amy. It was the theme of the episode for me above anything else. Poor Ephram as well, but taking in everything as a whole, past, present and future... the answer is... poor Amy.

- Seeing Ephram walking to see Madison, ready to enter hell... such a tense scene for the audience to witness.

- Bright and Amy had some great scenes together.

- No matter how much I watch that scene between Andy and Madison I still despise and blame Madison so much more. She entered his home, he hired her, she seduced his underage son and from that point forward everything Andy requested she went against.

1. Please don't date my son. Denied.
2. Please don't hurt him. Denied.
3. Certainly please don't get pregnant and tie you to him forever. Denied.

Everything he said, she did not respect Andy. She's lucky he didn't fire her and/or get the authorities involved. Then somehow she finally listens to him when she gets pregnant? He didn't hold a gun to her head. Yet she listens for the very first time? Then finds the precise moment to turn it on Andy as if he is at fault for everything, not Madison. She is such a vile character the thought never crosses her mind that Andy deserves an apology given how many times she went against what he requested and still made mistake after mistake which lead to where she is today. Good old Maddy simply cannot own up to her mistakes, she has to blame Andy for everything. I hate her. Sorry, I loathe her.

- Bright's idea to apologize to all of those girls... and the "You hooked up with Kayla?!" "Um I don't think you were supposed to know about that one". Great line.

- This episode was a tough one but you cannot deny it was remarkable! The tone, the pacing, writing, acting, directing. I'm so glad we got to have an Irv voice-over (even Edna was involved) and I'm glad his voice-overs were part of a novel.

- This episode was very "connecting to the beginning."

- If you erase the bomb about to go off... Andy and Ephram walking around in NYC was fun ... and Ephram playing the piano on the street, and Andy visiting the old hospital he worked long hours in. Nice closure/continuity. Seeing Madison's mug killed the piano scene but before her stupid face entered the screen I loved Ephram playing away on the piano and not caring that so many were admiring his talent.

- Madison saying Andy was the only one she could trust was complete garbage. She had friends, she was strong enough to get involved with a minor, you go find a clinic in Denver to handle this. Harold mentioned this in S1. They refer to a clinic in Denver where she would have received every ounce of healthcare she needed, both physical and emotional. It is ridiculous how she put it all on Andy. She could trust Andy but never respected him before this time? Screw you, Madison.

- Let's be clear... telling Ephram when she did was cruel and deliberate. Does it shock me she deliberately screwed up his audition and timed it perfectly? Nope, she's a witch. But it's still disgusting. She could have asked for a last meet up after his audition and used the excuse of coffee while hearing about the audition. Nope. Not Madison. She had to tell him at the precise moment when it would shatter everything around him. That is what she did. She wanted Andy to pay and used Ephram to get there.

- Ending this on a good note... I liked the Minnesota mention once again!

Harold really deserves so much blame. He stopped Andy from telling Ephram at the beginning of S3 then proceeds to tell Amy at the worst possible moment.

Right?!?! Exactly. I would be so worried. I am shocked he never asked why that would be, at least getting her to give him a subject area.

I was very confused over this office bit. He freaked out when Edna tried getting him office space but now he has an office?

I was shocked hearing that as well! I totally forgot about the neurological impairment parallel.

I love these voice-overs as well. Irv articulates the scenes so well with wonderful writing skill. Love listening to him.

Amy is truly suffering. What is so heartbreaking and moving at the same time is that she is so devastated by this news, but at the same time thinking of Ephram and doing all in her power to keep him from suffering.

Ephram's head was a brick when he returned from NYC. So frustrating that he didn't listen to reason from anyone. He was just into himself....feeling sorry for himself....and not thinking of anyone else. I just wanted to strangle him during this time.

THis should have been a happy time for Amy who would have gone to NYC with Ephram instead of Andy and the Madison situation/reveal would have probably been prevented.

Right?!?! Exactly. I would be so worried. I am shocked he never asked why that would be, at least getting her to give him a subject area.
Ephram was so into himself at that time that he dismissed everything she said. He needed to pursue the subject with her, because it was evident that Amy was hurting.

10000000000%.

That’s right. It would have been so cute seeing Ephram and Amy back in NYC together. Great continuity showing them when they first got together spending time there then for Ephram’s audition and success spending more time together once again. NYC could have been Ephram and Amy’s place. Ephram had bad memories there given his mom’s tragic passing and Andy not being ideal. So it would have been great seeing Ephram and Amy label NYC their little getaway and place representing their love and relationship.

Amy should have been there for Ephram in general too. Ephram even said Amy was with him every step of the way. It was so cute how Amy knew what song he was playing during the phone call. Amy should have been there. Stupid Harold screwed it all up.

Yes, there’s absolutely no way Madison tells Ephram with Amy there. No way. She is vile but wouldn’t go there unless she got Ephram alone and that wouldn’t have happened with Amy there.

You notice things I don't many times.

Amy is truly suffering. What is so heartbreaking and moving at the same time is that she is so devastated by this news, but at the same time thinking of Ephram and doing all in her power to keep him from suffering.
Yes.

Ephram's head was a brick when he returned from NYC. So frustrating that he didn't listen to reason from anyone. He was just into himself....feeling sorry for himself....and not thinking of anyone else. I just wanted to strangle him during this time.
Exactly right.

I really wish I enjoyed the bantering and thought is was cute...I really do! It's just that Edna treated Irv better than she treated anyone else in her life and she didn't deserve Irv's reactions to anything that he overreacted to. I don't care for the man, but I guess I should be happy that he and Edna are back together because Edna really loves him.
You make sense with your thoughts. I totally see where you're coming from.

Foreshadowing of things to come.
Indeed.

I was thinking the exact same thing! All he said was, "I'll call you after the audition. " No I love you, too. WTF???
Yes, why?! I don't get it. Especially since he told her he was going to meet Madison too. An ILY you would think would come naturally. But then again, I guess Amy said she was giving him an ILY or something like that... I will have to check out the dialogue. It was still weird that Ephram didn't tell her he loved her too.

Quote:
Yeah, you're right. I really should not feel sorry for her. She must have won the lottery!
No, you can feel sorry for her. I want to feel sorry for her too! I just can't.

Yes.

Quote:
Right??? There is not always continuity on this show.

Andy saw that immediately. THat surgeon missed his son's 10th birthday party. Andy has been there done that.
Precisely.

Amy was suffering more than anyone.
Absolutely.

Here it is... we can decide if Ephram should have said ILY back:

Quote:
[Cut to Hotel - Ephram is practicing his audition piece in a ballroom on a piano. It looks like he has been practicing for a while. He finishes and then picks up his cell phone to call Amy.]

EPHRAM: (into phone) Guess what I just did?

[Cut to Amy's bedroom - Amy is sitting on her bed.]

AMY: (into phone) Umm, played the crap out of Haydn.

EPHRAM: That too.

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: (CONT'D) But I was gonna tell you about the package I just sent you.

[Cut back to Amy sitting on her bed.]

AMY: You're not gonna tell me what's in it, are you?

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: Uh, no, but you should get it tomorrow morning so you won't have to wait too long.

[Cut back to Amy sitting on her bed.]

AMY: That's still mean. So how's New York?

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: New York's great. I managed to score one of the hotel's stray cocktail hour pianos so I've been practicing like nonstop. This is my first break in like three Powerbars.

[Cut back to Amy sitting on her bed who lays down.]

AMY: Ooh, sounds like I'm really missing out.

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: So, listen, I, uh, I bumped into Madison today.

[Cut to Amy who is laying on her bed.]

AMY: Wow, umm... Madison, really, uh... How is she?

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: She's good. She's real good. Y'know, she was fine. We didn't really get a chance to talk long, but, uh, we were gonna maybe meet up again tomorrow.

[Cut to Amy who is laying on her bed.]

AMY: But she seemed okay?

EPHRAM: Yeah.

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: (CONT'D) Yeah, that was the thing. It was totally weird. It was like I used to have all these feelings and everything...

[Cut to Amy who is laying on her bed.]

EPHRAM: (CONT'D) ...but I'm totally over it. It's like running into my cousin.

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: (CONT'D) Anyway, I-I just want you to know. Reaction?

[Cut to Amy who is laying on her bed.]

AMY: Uh, just surprised. Uh, are you gonna see her again?

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: Yeah, I mean, unless if you have a problem with that.

[Cut to Amy who is laying on her bed.]

AMY: But she knows it's your audition, right?

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: Yeah.

[Cut to Amy who is laying on her bed.]

AMY: I just wouldn't want anything to throw you off.

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: It-It won't. We're just catchin' up. She gets all clingy, I'll just walk out of the diner.

[Cut to Amy who is laying on her bed.]

AMY: Well, then tell her I say hi.

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: Thank you.

[Cut to Amy who is getting back up from her bed.]

AMY: Well, uh, you should, uh, probably get some sleep, you got a big day coming up.

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: Yeah, I don't know, I feel pretty ready though.

[Cut to Amy sitting on her bed. She is silent.]

EPHRAM: What?

AMY: I was just...trying to find something better to say than I love you.

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: Well, I'll take it.

[Cut to Amy sitting on her bed.]

AMY: Then I love you.

[Cut back to Ephram in the ballroom.]

EPHRAM: I'll call you first thing after my audition.

AMY: Okay. Bye.

[Ephram hangs up the phone and starts to play again.]

Agreed. Seeing the dialogue above doesn’t change the fact that he should have said it. Especially since he was off to meet Madison shortly after the phone call.

Hey Guys:

Betty and I have decided due to being busy, illness, let's delay one week so we all have time to watch and discuss this episode. That way we won't feel rushed at all. Stranger Things S4 (Vol. 1) drops Friday which makes delaying one more week truly meant to be.

To summarize:

3.16: One more week

3.17: Begins 6/5
