47—The Importance and Reoccurrence of this Prime Number
47—The Importance and Reoccurrence of this Prime Number
As I have been re-watching the first two seasons of Alias on DVD, I began to notice a reoccurring use of the number 47. I wonder what the importance of this is.... Someone once mentioned to me that some director or writer of one of the Star Trek series always used some four or five digit number like 61850 in the episodes. It would appear as a start date, as a combination, as a port, etc. The number ended up being the writer or director's birthday. I wonder what's so important about 47. Have you guys discussed this before? Of course 47 is important to Alias because it becomes in episdoe Page 47 the page that the prophecy of whom we believe to be Sydney is discovered. However, even back in the pilot episode, the number 47 appeared. Marshall had made a camera in the form of a lipstick tube that could take 40 pictures. He wanted to get it up to 47, because it's a prime number. So I thought it's be fun to discuss this number, it's importance, it's reoccurrence. If you have a theory or true knowledge of why 47 is important or used so often by the writer, then post. If you watch an old episode (either via DVD or via it's airing for the first time in your country) and you notice 47, post. I'll have to go back and rewatch some episodes, but I remember 47 being a combination to something Will was opening, or maybe the locker he went to. There was also a dock that Sydney had a meeting at in one episode that ended in 47. |
I can tell you that the number 47 is seen or mentioned at least once in every single ep to date.
I can also tell you I have disscussed this with other fans and no one I know has come up with the reason behind the number! If you figure it out I would love to know |

I know that there's an actual following for the number 47, and a site with its importance, not related in any way to Alias, that was posted a looong time ago, I don't have the link though.
Maybe I'm just naive, but I guess I've always thought that the 47 was something JJ would throw in to remind us that everything is connected to Rambaldi ... there were episodes last season when things would happen on floor 47, could that POSSIBLY have some other significance, other than a not-so-gentle reminder of Rambaldi? Just my two cents. |
Yeah I know it's about Rambaldi, which they are not done with yet and may never be, so I am sure we will see this number a whole lot more
Great idea for a thread. |
I had a few that I remembered all typed out and ready to post Thurs. But then my computer locked up and all gone.
So here are the few that I can remember off the top of my head. Almost Thirty Years- The circumfrence was in room 47. Phase One- The central Alliance computer was server 47 on a 747. A Higher Eschelon- Marshall was held/ rescued on floor 47 Conscious- In her dream I think she was trying to get into room 47. There's also been codes with 47 in them (one was 4747). Box 47, that type of thing. That's all I've got for now. |

There are a few websites dedicated to 47. This isn't the one I was thinking of...but it's the only one I can find right now. The idea is that the number 47 is the number that occurs the most in the universe. And so in the Alias realm, Rambaldi constantly used the number 47 in his work (pg 47, etc).

Wow! Great ideas guys.
I do wonder, though, if 47 has more importance than just Rambaldi. Hmmm... I know from the very first episode, as I mentioned in my opening, 47 was mentioned. And not in reference to Rambaldi, although from that first episode there was a search for the Rambaldi documents. We really didn't know the Page 47 significance until later. Carol |
Okay, I was just re-watching 2.11 "A Higher Echelon" and I noticed two different places where 47 was used.
First, Sydney and Dixon were trying to obtain the hard drive from some computer so that they could get packets of information Marshall had sent to SD-6. The hard drive that Sydney was looking for on the server had been sent to the repair room, which was on the first floor, room 147. Later in that same episode, 47 was even more prominent. Dixon and Sydney had gone to Mexico City to rescue Marshall. Marshall was being held on the 47th floor. In fact, he and Sydney had to jump out of the 47th floor window to escape--remember Marshall's sewn in parachute with tandem harnass? The greatest! |
Okay. I watched a few other episodes last night, and in each one I did discover the number 47! This is beginning to become an obsession with me!
In 2.12 The Getaway, while in Nice, Fracnce Dixon was serving as look-out at the airport; in doing so, he was standing in the open area, asking for money/contributions. While waiting on the guy they were waiting for (can't remember his name), Dixon commented via radio to Sydney "I've already made 47 euros" !!! In 2.13 Phase One, it was server 47 (the plane) that held all the information of all the SD-6 cells; this server gave all the needed information for the CIA to take down all Alliance branches. This server 47 was also held on the 747 plane. In 2.14 Double Agent, Agenet Lennox was being held in the sublevel, room.... you guessed it, 47! |
I knew it came up a lot...but every episode? That's pretty impressive.
I'll be looking for it more carefully tonight. And I always thought what Den said - JJ's just reminding us of Rambaldi, but I don't know how to explain the thing with the pilot. |
I don't think it's in every single episode, but probably pretty close. I know one of the Alias sites actually has it listed. I'll see if I can find that site again.
But yeah...I already loved the number "47" before Alias. Roswell used to be my favorite show, and it had significance in that the famous "roswell crash" was in 1947. So between that and Alias, I put the number 47 into everything now...I see it everywhere too. But is that just b/c it's on my mind more? Or is there some bigger phenomenal reason? Uh..right..I'll find that site. |
It was pretty obvious in Facade last night. It was in the false code Ryan gave the CIA.
I have to admit, it was fun looking out for it. |
Page 47 is also the special page that Rambaldi marks as blank, and uses a special ink to be able to read.
I think it's particularly significant, when it comes to the Rambaldi prophecy. Anyone remember this, or did I get the number wrong? I'm pretty sure Page 47 is the number for the Rambaldi secret, for every manuscript. |
