The whole soulmate thing was because the writers never showed them being soulmates. I always wonder if Joey really believed they were soulmates or she was going along with Dawson because she didn’t want to have a argument.

The OP is just another reminder how toxic they were together. I agree that they never should of been paired, they always more like family than a couple (Another reason they never had romantic or sexual chemistry) Never bought them as soulmates either, that was just an overblown fantasy in Dawson's head. Kevin said Dawson/Joey were based on his childhood, he seemed not to know how to write them in romantic relationship in season two but also in season one all of a sudden Dawson likes her in the end when he was obsessed with Jen the whole season and when she only was dressed up. Then is season two they broke them up at the beginning. I don’t know if that was the network telling them to break up or the writers just didn’t know how to tell a love story between them.

Dawson really didn’t take Joey art seriously and only thought about himself. I understand why Joey was pissed off at him when he was basing the movie on his and her life. Again they got back together at the end because I think they felt like they had to because everyone called them soulmates and Dawson is joey girl.

I wonder when the term soulmate first came up? I can't remember but I know it was Dawson who said it. But it's like once Dawson sees Joey that way, he deems it so. But for a long time he was maintaining she was like a sister to him...

And also, Dawson_creek_fan, KW is gay and I don't believe he and his best friend ever were romantic, so making DJo romantic when he and his best friend from childhood weren't just really didn't translate well at all when making DJo romantic.

I'll always remember how Dawson only really saw Joey once she was in make up and a dress. He never saw *her*, he saw what he wanted to. He saw an idealized version of her, something he put on a pedestal.

But Pacey crushes on her in DD without any make up or dress or frills, none of that. And he falls in love with her in season 3 when she isn't all dolled up either. Pacey always saw the real her. Dawson didn't.

I thought it was actually Devon who started calling them that when she started to study Joey for Dawson's movie.

I felt the show was at its weakest when it pushed the soulmate narrative. Like trying to force it to be true by saying it over and over, instead of showing us a couple we can actually root for

I don’t like PA but it seem like Kevin can write a relationship for them so it hard to believe he can’t for DJo unless the other writers wrote for them. It’s seem like writers can write for any other couple but not them. I also wonder if he had kept it like his real life. Have Dawson be gay and show the relationship Kevin had with him and his friend in real life. But the network would have never went for that. Have Jen come in the show but not for a love interest but as a trouble kid and become friends with all of them like in the show.

I don’t think soulmates came into the until season two because I remember Jack saying it at the wedding

I agree with all of you. Dawson making that movie about their breakup in S2 was another bizarre and toxic action (and I just remembered that episode had Rachel Leigh Cook in it lol) Just another self absorbed and overdramatic action from him. I always thought it was really shallow how Dawson only noticed Joey in S1 when she got all dressed up for that beauty pageant after being obsessed with Jen all season. That makes Joey look like the rebound, just like when he slept with her when he had a girlfriend. I agree that Pacey didn't need her drowned in makeup to find her beautiful. Yeah, they kept trying to shove the soulmate bs down our throats, but they never SHOWED it. Like Pacey said, they implode easily at the first sign of crisis. They could never even maintain the relationship long term! That's one of the many reasons I would of never bought D/J as endgame. It's still so damn unrealistic lol. I also agree they just couldn't write D/J as a good and believable couple. They even made Pacey and his teacher look more believable as a couple than D/J. Which is screwed up on many levels, but they seemed to even make them more of a priority than D/J.

I do like the best friends to lovers sometimes but when they don’t know how to write for them or the main character is like Dawson I would roll my eyes and just say can we move already instead of dragging it out.

I didn’t like that Dawson asked Joey to come on the date with him and Jen. I felt like he wasn’t taking Joey feeling in to consideration like he expected her to drop everything and just be there.
