Episode Discussion # 405 - "A Family Way"
The Official Dawson's Creek Board Rewatch Thread "A Family Way" ~ 4x05 Synopsis: Gale sees no relief in sight from her bout with the flu until a pregnancy test reveals her true condition. Dawson is less than trilled that the Leery family may be adding another member, until he learns that his parents are planning to terminate the pregnancy. Feeling hurt and confused, Dawson confides in Gretchen who seems particularly uncomfortable with this topic. Finally Gretchen reveals her reason for returning to Capeside--she too got pregnant while at school and had a miscarriage. Not wanting to face similar issues and fearing that she may no longer be able to fend off Pacey, Joey decides to visit a free clinic to become more sexually responsible. Unfortunately, Bessie jumps to the wrong conclusion when she stumbles upon Joey's birth control stash. Meanwhile, Andie convinces Jack to become a pee-wee soccer coach in order to augment his extra-curricular activities. However, the plan backfires when the advances of a player's older sister force Jack to reveal his sexual identity and bigotry resurfaces. We would like to invite everyone to participate in our re-watch, be it first-time viewer or long-time fan. This is our opportunity to relive the Dawson's Creek days and to discuss our favorite moments, things we would like to change or maybe totally new things we never noticed before. We will watch one episode every two weeks. Due to our different time-zones we decided to not name an exact time and date, so everyone can decide for themselves when they watch the episode. We will update this thread every second Friday, when we start a new episode, so all discussion can take place in here too. Have Fun! Synopsis posted by Pace & Jo __________________
Pacey to Joey- The simple act of being in love with you is enough for me.
Angel- I love you. I try not to, but I can't stop. Buffy- Me, me, too. I can't either. Last edited by ChristinaL80; 05-27-2017 at 05:49 PM |

This episode was kind of boring. I remember wondering why Dawson was made to be the most responsible and important person in his parents decision regarding what to do with their baby. I also did find it *really* weird that Mitch and Gale would decide to terminate a pregnancy based pretty much on their age. It just didnt seem like a decision they'd make but then I remembered that Dawson had to be redeemed in season 4 so saving babies from fetal termination was probably another great way to do that.
The Joey/Pacey sex stuff was blah. I dont think the set up was all that great, I dont recall Pacey having to be "fended off" once regarding sex, didnt he not want it in the beginning of this episode? Definitely very "Joey" to stock up on birth control 6 months before any sex were to happen. And then they tickle each other at the end of the episode. Hot. But then I remember that they're just 17 and it's ok. Definitely enjoyed the Jen/Joey interaction though. And then Jack faces gay issues. Huuuuuuge surprise. Except not. This was the first episode I was disappointed in in season 4. |

I agree not the best season 4 ep.
Well, I liked the teaser finding out Gale is pregnant. The way Dawson and Mitch look at her is funny. I have to say I enjoyed Mr. Brooks and Dawsons interaction in this episode I think they worked great together. I can totally understand Dawsons reaction to hearing they are not gonna have the baby and I liked he could talk to Gretchen about it and she helped him understand and deal with it.Â* I l like what Dawson said to Gale about the kid being Lucky and found it to be a touching scene.Â* I could care less about Joey/Pacey sex saga The Jack Soccer thing I also did not care much about. __________________

I tried to watch it again just for the purpose of this thread but *sigh* I didn't even make it to the end.
My two bobs worth: - I didn't like Dawson's initial reaction to his parents' news or the way he handled it at first but he came through at the end - the whole build-up to Joey being ready for sex was a little tired and that doctor she visited was a little weird alternating between fear and friendship... - Jack and soccer. Really he's gay? Oh, that's right. Very one-dimensional portrayal of Jackers. __________________

I'm glad I'm not the only who thought that!
It was like the writers thought "Okay let's make sure we cover all the risks associated with sex" and then tried to balance it with "but the kids'll only listen to us if get alongside them and care" You could almost see the doctor switch approaches... __________________

I liked the Jen and Joey interaction, but so much of the episode (at least the Pacey/Joey material) read like a bad after-school special to me. Also, Bessie strikes me as rather hypocritical - in "The Kiss" and "Coming Home" she doesn't seem so vigilant about Joey's virginity, but all of a sudden now it's a major point of contention. Granted, there's a vast difference between joking with your sister about something and the reality of finding birth control in her bedroom, but I'm not sure if that was made clear. Overall, an okay episode. I liked Bodie and Joey's interaction, although only because any time Bodie gets a scene I'm happy. I also liked getting to know more about Gretchen, and watching her friendship with Dawson deepen. The Jack storyline was just boring (why, oh why, couldn't Jack have something to do on this show other than complain about being gay and oppressed?). __________________

The episode was definitely more on the slow side but I did enjoy parts of it.
I liked to see Joey worrying about sex. I think that's natural for someone her age, especially someone that is in a relationship. I love that she's still a virgin too and that they didn't skip over that plot point like some teen shows do when a couple gets together. The doctor was totally creepy in her pitch to Joey. I understand her trying to give Joey the facts but she sort of talked to her more like a therapist than a doctor. I thought Bessie was way too harsh on Joey, at least she was being responsible about sex. She should have sat her down and talked to her about it instead of yelling about it. I completely understand Dawson’s fears about his parents having another kid. Their marriage issues were a definite concern! I think its understandable he would be scared. I'm glad that he encouraged his mom to have the baby in the end. A new sibling is an incredible thing. The Dawson/Gretchen friendship in this episode was fantastic, I just love how much Gretchen is there for him and is a shoulder for him to lean on during this lonely time in his life. Jack's storyline was a snooze and Andie really had nothing to do either, I wish they had better material. The cougar chick was just gross, like go away, he's in highschool you freak! No Jen this episode either? |
