After spending all of her 15 years bouncing from one foster family to another in Portland, Oregon, Lux (Britt Robertson, "Swingtown") has decided it's time to take control of her life and become an emancipated minor. Her journey through the legal maze leads Lux to her biological father, 30-something Nate "Baze" Bazile (Kristoffer Polaha, "Mad Men"), who owns a bar, lives like an aging frat-boy with two slacker roommates, and is astonished to learn that he has a teenage daughter. Lux is equally astonished when Baze reveals that her mother is Cate Cassidy (Shiri Appleby, "E.R."), a star on the local "Morning Madness" radio show, along with her on-air partner and real-life boyfriend, Ryan Thomas (Kerr Smith, "Eli Stone"). Lux has been listening to Cate's voice on the radio as long as she can remember, so she feels an instant connection with the mom she's never met. Baze takes Lux to meet Cate, who is shocked and saddened to learn that Lux has grown up in foster care, but thrilled to finally meet her beautiful daughter. When a judge decides that Lux isn't ready for emancipation and unexpectedly grants temporary joint custody to Baze and Cate, they agree to try to get past the awkwardness and make a belated attempt to give Lux the family she deserves. LIFE UNEXPECTED is produced by Mojo Films in association with CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television with executive producers Liz Tigelaar ("Brothers and Sisters," "What About Brian") and Gary Fleder ("October Road"). Gary Fleder directed the pilot.

1x03: MEET THE PARENTS — When Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) tells his parents (guest stars Robin Thomas and Susan Hogan) about Lux (Britt Robertson), they insist on planning a dinner at which they can meet their granddaughter and Cate (Shiri Appleby). Cate reluctantly agrees to go to the dinner and is further annoyed when her overbearing mother (guest star Cynthia Stevenson) and neurotic sister (guest star Alex Breckenridge) show up unexpectedly. Meanwhile, when Cate (Shiri Appleby) hears about a gang fight at Lux’s school, she immediately decides to have Lux transferred to her and Baze’s (Kristoffer Polaha) alma mater, Westmonte.

1x04: LUX GETS SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL — When Lux (Britt Robertson) gets suspended from school, Cate (Shiri Appleby) does her best to convince Principal Dugan (guest star Merrilyn Gann, “Everwood”) to give Lux a second chance, but, unfortunately, her efforts may have made the situation considerably worse for Lux. Meanwhile, Baze (Kristoffer Polaha) is insulted when he finds out that Cate and Ryan (Kerr Smith) are hosting a radio station event at the bar across the street.

1x05: LUX THROWS A PARTY IN BAZE'S LOFT — Off to a rocky start at her new school, Lux (Britt Robertson) offers to throw a party in Baze's (Kristoffer Polaha) loft in an effort to impress the high school quarterback, Jones (guest star Austin Butler), and his friends. Cate (Shiri Appleby) worries that her relationship with Lux will never measure up to the bond Lux has so easily made with Baze. Austin Basis and Kerr Smith also star. Alan Arkush directed the episode written by Adele Lim.

GENERAL SPOILERS:

• Cate and Baze make peaces at their former school:
  Do you have a favorite moment from filming the show so far?
  Shiri: Actually, Kris and I shot a scene the other night. We were back in the high school and Cate has to tell him how she really felt about him back then, how she thought that he was going to be her boyfriend, and how crushed she was by him. And what was interesting was being back in high school, and having to do that, and these characters are now moving past hating each other because they are so uncomfortable. They are starting to see each other for the people they really are and I feel like — I don’t know, I feel like the show is starting to go in a really, really interesting, cool direction. And that night was really special. It was five o’clock in the morning (laughs) and we were so tired, there were no guards up. It was a really good scene.

• Cate discovers that her mother hid birthday cards that her father sent after he left homeand so she road trips it up with Baze and Lux to visit him. Cate doesn’t want her father to think she ignored him – she actually wants him in her life.
  On the way, the lil family that could gets in an accident with a unusual vehicle a livestock truck full of chickens. The repair shop guy needs an extra day to fix their truck, so they need to find a hotel room. Unfortunately, there aren’t many rooms in town thanks to a toddler pageant, so the family ends up at a B&B, in one small room. But Lux is there, so there won’t be any hanky-panky going on.

• In an upcoming episode, we’ll find that Baze & Cate legally take back their child – for good. They’re a family, you guys ! Well… plus one fiance.
  We even know what song will play over the scene: “Love Me Like the World is Ending” by Ben Lee.
  At the courthouse, as they wait with bated breath, the judge says:
  I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve seen a lot of heartache and disappointment. Because prayers are rarely answered. And usually, dreams remain dreams. But today, your dream becomes a reality. The State of Oregan finds that it is in the best interests of Lux Cassidy to cease being a ward of the state and to have the rights of her biological parents reinstated… Congratulations, all of you. You’re a family.
  Pretty poetic for a judge! But who cares – no one is breaking this party up. And that’s not all. We get a little Baze and Cate fangirl moment:
  
  As they pose for the picture, Lux in front, Baze puts his hand out to Cate, a sign of solidarity. They hold hands, interlacing fingers. Baze looks at her.
  Cate may be wearing her engagement ring to Ryan, but you just know she’s all about the Baze.
