It was silly but it made sense because it showed that if that could set them off, that means ALL OF THEM were hiding how they were truly feeling inside. So Spike just played on what he was seeing hidden between the gang. Willow never thought Buffy accepted her being a lesbian because of how Buffy initially reacted to it but it was one of the things they just moved on from and didn't discuss until that episode... and with Xander, he was pretty much the outsider of the gang that season because he wasn't in college and doing what everyone else was feeling so he probably did feel left out.

So Spike just played on what was under the surface... and luckily he did because it made them stronger because of it.
