It was definitely the dark forces. However, the good forces gave them BOTH something they never thought they could have, a child.
So yup, the universe was pulling them together. lol
Even in the beginning of the Darla/Liam (Angel) relationship, you can clearly see how Liam wasn't truly all that happy with his life since he and his father were at odds and he was just the party guy who didn't care and than Darla came to his life right at the right moment.
