I think it's because none of the other characters seemed to really give a crap that she was gone that people immediately felt protective of her. I mean aside from Nancy no one cared about her when Will was the clear priority.
Also I feel like Nancy is who everyone wished they were like at parties, but Barb is who they were in reality
