I don't know if Esau is the smoke monster, but I wouldn't be surprised if he controlled it... like a pet.

Jacob was living under the Statue of Taweret on the shore.
Esau probably lived in the
Temple in the inner part of the island, where the smoke monster came from until he abandoned it. Explains why the smoke monster does what it wants and the Temple's condition is in a poor state. Also, the hieroglyphs show that it is
Anubis that controls the smoke monster. (or I think it's Anubis).
I think Smokey might be Esau's pet or guardian.
