Maybe it is about her sister? She is sister of Nicole after all. Also Colin is a good friend of her daughter after all.

According to Turtleboy the play fighting between Brian Sr. and Higgins at the bar was about discussing messing up John later. There are reports Brian Sr. beat other cops over the years.
According to Turtleboy they wanted to beat him up to put him in his place (Brian Sr. and Colin) regarding his reports of drug deals in town. They wanted to do this outside the last bar, with Karen already leaving. Karen did not leave with Jen so they improvised and had it take place at the home. It was a beating gone wrong. Initially, they were going to blame a snowplow for his death, but things worked out too perfectly when Karen found him so then they switched the plan to Karen being set up for the murder.
No idea if true but to me it’s obvious there was something in the works. These people were not his true friends. His true friends existed at the first bar; who John and Karen were with at the second bar were not his friends, they were out to get him.

I can’t say if it was done on purpose or not because I am not sure I find Turtleboy 100 % trustworthy. But I do think that Proctor made up his mind about Karen killing John because of what Jen said. Now whether Proctor was on the framing from the beginning or just believed Jen and Alberts and did not look anywhere else I do not know.
I also do think that part of it is that Jen just does not like Karen.
