Audiences had developed a strong affinity for Damon's portrayal of Bourne, and many fans were simply less receptive to a next-generation-type role or the perception of Damon being replaced – even by an actor of Renner's caliber. Renner delivered a fine performance, but it didn't connect with audiences on the same level as Damon's.
