Of course the sequel had low expectations, and many delays so people just were looking forward to seeing it. But it had low expectations because no one could figure out how it would go.
So, to see that they did a great job, and honored the original film but made it's own.
No one thought the original would amount to anything, and it shocked everyone. So, it had to live up a lot but then it had been over 3 decades, so no one knew what to expect.
The original stands up in many ways, but after Goose's death, it seems like the film could have been longer, and everything is a rush to get Maverick back in the field to get to the final battle, and the ending.
You don't sense the rush in the sequel. It's more evenly paced.
Loved it, almost tempted to go see it again in the theatre.
