My folks aren't getting anymore animals because of that very concern. I can't see myself ever without a pet, but like you, I'd need to make sure I had multiple options for them once it becomes possible that they could reasonably outlive me. Fortunately that isn't something I currently have to deal with, since I very much doubt the horse will make it another year, and the cat probably has ten years max, and I won't even be forty then. But my folks are in their 60s, so they're starting to have to think about that angle too.
