Yeah I don't agree with his take on that moment at all. To me that is just all part of Luke and Lorelai's banter. They tease each other and Luke gives back just as good. Like when he responds with asking her to marry him and saying he was just looking for something to shut her up. It's one of their ways they flirt with each other, but not knowing they're flirting.
