I agree. In S3, I think part of it was just being protective of his mother. As you say, he was right, but I don't think it was 100% a reasoned response.
In S4, I think Ralph was mature enough to judge the situation on its merits, with minimal influence based on sentimentality. I can easily see Ralph having a bit of an argument with Paige over this, trying to convince her that she's not being fair in her condemnation of Walter.
