It didn't make sense, because David didn't act the least bit bothered when Donna dated Joe. He had moved on and fallen in love with Val.
Also, David/Donna lost all credibility as endgame when he told Val "I want to be with you more than anyone else in the world." You can't have an epic quote like that and then just act like it was never said.
