MSN's List of the Worst Movie Remakes

Hey guys! Just saw this lovely report:

Worst Hollywood Remakes

A fad or an epidemic? We look at cinema's worst regurgitations

By Kim Morgan
Special to MSN Movies

Bad movie remakes, like extras in a cheesy disaster flick, are too numerous to count. In compiling our list of the 10 worst remakes ever, we just didn't know where to start: There's such an embarrassment of, well, embarrassments.

And Hollywood isn't stopping any time soon. With "Bewitched," "Dark Water," and "The Longest Yard" in theaters now, and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, "The Bad News Bears" and "The Dukes of Hazzard" on the way, remakes have become something of an epidemic. But with rare exceptions (last year's surprisingly great "Dawn of the Dead"), most current remakes have been major disappointments for critics and audiences alike. So why do studios keep making 'em?

Lack of creativity is one reason. Seeming comfort for audiences who don't want surprises is another (though we can't think of anything more discomforting than the rumored remake of "The Birds" by Michael Bay). And, on a more positive note, directors and writers are eager to inject something new and daring into old chestnuts.

But for now, we're accentuating the negative. Here is our dishonor roll of awful remakes. Read on and get, to quote one of our list's titles, "Swept Away" in the insanity of it all.

(Below is just the list of movies that made "the worst remakes" list)

'Godzilla' (1998)

'The Haunting' (1999)

'The Longest Yard' (2005)

'Rollerball' (2002)

'A Star Is Born' (1976)

'The Stepford Wives' (2004)

'Swept Away' (2002)

'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (2003)

'The Vanishing' (1993)

You've Got Mail' (1998)

Most Hated Remake: Psycho (1998)

I thought Godzilla was pretty good and some of the others I never saw. So, do you guys agree or disagree with MSN?

I both agree and disagree with msn's article. I have to agree on the fact that too many remake's are being made and the lack of creativity. I also definetely have to agree with their statement about Dawn of the Dead. That remake kicked ass. I have to disagree about The Haunting and Texas Chainsaw Massacre being bad remakes. I haven't seen The Haunting in years but I clearly remember enjoying it. I also own TCM on dvd and it's definetely one of my favorite remakes.

I agree with that entire list.

Although, I loved it "cinematically" the look of TCM, the story/acting/casting was dreadful.

I hated The Stepford Wives and I didn't even watch the original. But to be fair I loved Bette's character and according to some critics the original movie sucked anyway.

You've got mail ??? I get that the original is a masterpiece but You've got mail was quite decent. Much better than all those other movies mentioned.

The Haunting was ok. But then again, I never watched the first one.

I'm actually quite happy that Alfie wasn't included on the list at all. I love both original and remake and never understood the harsh criticism.

Thank god "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1999) isn't on that list. I think it is one of the better remakes and apparently, others agree.

As for the rest of the list... I agree with most of it. I think the key is how much the film is remade and to what extreme... Like Godzilla where they turned the "he" into a "she" and turned the last half of the film into "Jurrasic Park" complete with "little dinosaurs" chasing people through the halls of Madison Sqare Garden

I agree and disagree with that list.

TCM was a great remake although not as scary as the original.

I thought TCM was cheesy ... and the original was MUCH better. Atleast, the first one was more gory and terrifying ... as this one was a joke. The acting, the story, ... it all was too much.

The cinemotography and editing on the other hand --- amazing!
