Yeah. In the Bible, people were usually punished by the same sin they commited. So a murderer starts commiting those, against people who commited one of the seven sins, one person for each sin. Gluttony, for example, he makes a fat man eat until his stomache explodes.

I was 11-12 when this movie came out and I went to see it in the theater with my mom and my grandma. Of course, I loved the subject but I couldn't understand the movie in itself with the themes were too dark for me, even though I had read about stuff like this before.

Anyway. The movie is about killer named John Doe who kills by the seven deadly sins while two cops, a veteran Somerset, and a rookie on that division, Mills, try to catch him before he finishes the chain killing.

That's the plot. But the movie is about deeper themes, like morality. How do you define morality? Is it so subjective that John Doe actually has a point, wether it justifies his killing or not?

Well, that's a debate for the ages but it's what the movie touches upon.

In the last act when Mills turns around as asks John Doe why is he killing innocent people John Doe is bewildered by the assumption that his victims were innocent. He sees them as sinners, and guilty as charged.

Of course we live in a democracy, not in a moralistic utopia, he can't go killing people for sins that aren't punishable by law. Sin is not the same as crime, etc.

Somerset represents the rugged pessimism of the city, and Mills represents the idealistic version of the fact that we can make a change no matter how dark the world seems to be getting.

John Doe represents madness but also a sickness of a world gone crazy. He is not remorseful, he really believes those people deserve to die and will try to convince you that they did.

I saw this movie a very long time ago. I don't remember much of it except thinking it was dark and good. I was very young and impressionable back then. I was shocked with that scene when Mills discored what happened to his wife. Umm... yes. Still, I liked the movie.

ROCKSTAR: Honestly, I don't think John Doe was justified in killing those people. Yes, they committed sin, but who can say they didn't? Who has not committed one of those sins or any other sin in their life? No one is perfect.

And of course, John Doe contradicts himself by committing a major sin as well by taking one's life. Who was he to play God?

I heart this movie.

It was kinda sick, especially the gluttony one. But I still love it.

Ugh. Yeah. Some scenes were a tad gruesome. I can handle gruesome and gore..I look away. Although this movie was less gore and more gruesome.

As long as you don't know the victim more closely, you can somehow handle the gruesomeness. But when you get involved, it's a shock. I never got over the Tracy's slaughter.
