Pittsburgh Post-Gazette 'Girls' remain estranged The WB's "Gilmore Girls" ended its season with Rory (Alexis Bledel) and Lorelai (Lauren Graham) on the outs and Lorelai proposing marriage to Luke (Scott Patterson). What will they do for a follow-up? "Nothing but hoedowns and clogging and figure skating," joked creator Amy Sherman Palladino. "We really enjoyed the romantic comedy last year. We had a lot of fun with that, with Luke and Lorelai's ups and downs, and there's gonna be more ups and downs." The season premiere will pick up in the diner, right after Lorelai has proposed to Luke. "We start off the year with Lorelai and Rory for the very first time truly being estranged from each other," Palladino said, "and trying to live completely separate lives without each other to talk to and lean on. It's an interesting dynamic." Rory dropped out of Yale at the end of last season, but Palladino wouldn't say whether she'll return to classes anytime soon. "Rory is Rory, and she's got a journey to go on," she said. Another reporter asked if that journey would include cocaine. "I can safely say the journey does not include that drug," said Daniel Palladino, another executive producer and the husband of the show's creator. "Crystal meth is a lot hotter. We wanted cocaine; they wanted crystal meth." Amy picked up on her husband's joking riff. "In our day it was horse, but the network says, 'No one says "horse" anymore,' " she kidded. "There's a lot of that conversation." There's been some pot-stirring in the press about the contract status of certain "Gilmore Girls" stars. Four are signed through the 2006-07 TV season -- Graham, Bledel, Kelly Bishop, Liza Weil -- and the rest are working under contracts that expire at the end of the 2005-06 season, most notably Patterson. Chances are the contracts of Patterson and the other actors will be renegotiated as the upcoming season winds down.
