And Breaking Dawn is a different book, I think that the Edward book is next year.

I think Bella matured well in Eclipse, but she is still one of my least fav female characters of any story. Maybe it's because I'm so used to strong women that she annoys me, or maybe it's her relationship with Edward. A few of my favorite pairings are Mulder/Scully, Han/Leia, Dean/Jo, all of which involve really strong women and the romance is just something on the side of the story. I'm mainly reading Breaking Dawn because I can't not finish a series once I start.
Yeah, true. Although, I did finish The Host last week, and I've got to say that I'm actually more happy with that book, than I was with the Twilight Saga. The romance wasn't as corny or cheesy, and the girls actually ends up with the guy I wanted her to. I liked Ian, so it only made sense...Okay, I did a little more reading and it seems you're right, Edward's book is going to be a different one. Either way, I'm sure I'll still read it to see what happens next, even though I'm not happy about the 'transformation'.

And I know! Independently, she's not strong at all. And it bothers me when girls like that practically depend on another guy to keep them happy, in a way. That's fine, she's in love with two people at once...but she shouldn't be marrying one of them until she's got that little problem of hers resolved.

ANYWAY. Enough of my Twilight rant. I've had a long, busy and drama-filled weekend, and now it's back to work! I hope you all had a good weekend. Keep us updated on the job, Jerry.

The Host was a better book not just because of the lack of corny romance but the plot itself was much more original. There's something about this whole vampire falling in love with a human that seems a touch overdone. It's kind of funny that I read this book because everyone on my newspaper staff in high school kept telling me to, and now I'm stuck in this awful spiral of "this story is dumb, but I have to know how it ends."

While the whole "invasion of the body snatchers" thing is a little overused, Meyers makes it new and her own with The Host. There are still some sex is taboo vibes to it, but it's less preachy.

I didn't know there was such a thing as a long weekend.

I know right? I have a love/relationship with the Twilight series. But I haven't read The Host yet...which I originally wasn't going to, but I might give it a shot.

I'm halfway through my exams. Then I'm free for 5 whole weeks.

I do like how she put a new spin on the vampire story by changing the rules though. Don't burn in the sun, no stakes, no garlic or turning into a bat.

Unfortunately there are lots of girls like Bella around, who are dependent & marry for the wrong reasons.
Besides the mythical aspect, it's a realistic look at teenage relationships. At least from what I have observed in real life.

I expected as much from Meyer.

Shevy, good luck on the other exams.

That's true. I appreciated that. I imagine Bella would have had a harder time falling in love with Edward if he was off turning into a bat every night.

Same here. There are some aspects of the books that I enjoy (like Carlisle ) but when I really think about them they are kind of foolish.

She's hardly the first writer to change up the vampire "rules." Take Thirsty (a better book than Twilight by a trillion) by M.T. Anderson or I am Legend (not the movie ) by Richard Matheson or Peeps by Scott Westerfield. Not to mention the book that takes the biggest twist in vampire legends I have ever heard of, Blue Bloods by Melissa De La Cruz. One could even argue that Bloodline by Kate Cary is original because her vampires can bear children.

I give her props for wanting to be a good role model, but she's not even subtle about it.

Maria, don't get yourself too exhausted. *grynz* and sex in the city? Honestly? I never took you for a girl that would watch that. I saw Kung Fu Panda this weekend, it's a pretty good movie.

Steph, it was a family thing. (reunion). Alas, it was a good trip, save for the Hotel, which was utterly attrocious.

Juli, I'll actually go with both, Tim and Johnny. Helena was much better as a villian, if you ask me.

And we're back to twilight......sniff.

Twilight isn't about vampires, it's about teenagers with sharp teeth.
Vampires don't "sparkle" in the sun: they screech in horror, burst into flame and wither to ash.

Got a cold there Jerry?

I'm way out of the times, who does the voices in Kung Fu Panda?

I'm taking my nieces and nephew to see that this Friday, I'm glad it was good.

I liked Sweeney Todd, but it wasn't Johnny best role. I think he is one of the most talented actors of our time (and the most versatile) so unless he's absolutely amazing I'm just not impressed anymore.

Side note, my last name's Burton. I once had this guy completely and utterly convinced that Tim was my uncle.

Jack Black, Angeline Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Lucy Lu, Jackie Chan.... and that's all I can think of right now.

See I don't read lots of vampire novels. I only read I Am Legend, which yes was very cool and better than the movie. I liked the originality of it. But those other, I never heard of.
I got to say the most interesting sounding one is the Kate Cary one. I like the idea that they can have children. Does she get into how it is possible?
What's the twist in Blue Bloods?

I like the idea them keeping their virtue. With Sex is everywhere these days that keeping it out of a teen story seems like an oddity.

Jerry, welcome back. What was wrong with the hotel? Just expensive or something else?

Guys, if you can come into Boba/Bob'ika Appreciation Thread #1 - Because There is Only One Boba Fett to play picture survivor.

Pretty much anything that has a slight chance of being creepy I read. I LOVE horror, it's my favorite everything genre. The thing I like most about I Am Legend was that it wasn't completely about Robert Neville - it was about the strength of human beings and their innate ability for survival. It was deeper than the movie made it out to be. Bloodline is actually a "sequel" to Bram Stoker's Dracula (and pretty true to the original story in my opinion). It's about all of the main characters children/descendants, including Dracula. There is a third book to the "series" called The Reckoning that's also pretty good. According to Cary, the vampires can have children who are also vampires, but if they're raised like humans their natural tendencies towards blood may never be revealed.

Blue Bloods is very odd. I have a similiar relationship between Blue Bloods and Twilight, I like them and hate them at the same time. Blue Bloods is written like the vampires are the fallen angels who followed Lucifer when he challenged God, and they're condemned to Earth to repent for their sins. They're not evil and they're not allowed to kill humans, but drink only a small amount of blood and to treat their "donors" () with respect and kindness. They're continuously reborn into new bodies, but they're not immortal. The main character is a girl whose vampire mother broke away from the coven and fell in love with a human and had her, Schuyler. She's a vampire, but not one of the continuing souls. Different from humans, different from vampires. It's very strange, but had it's really good moments.

Not to ruin anything, but you might not be a big fan of The Host then.

I agree about the themes of I Am Legend.
I listed those books for future reading.
That all sound very cool.
I read a lot of Star Wars books, chick lit, and coming of age books.

What do you mean?
Is sex implied? I can't imagine her describing it.

They're all worth the read if you have free time, though none are exactly earth-shattering . I think that the best in the ones I mentioned are probably Bloodline and Thirsty.

I haven't read much chick lit, for some reason it never appealed to me. What are coming of age books?

There's a pretty vivid make-out scene and a bunch of implications, especially near the end.

Shevy, yer Hirlarious....thx.

Juli, don't forget Ian McShane as well and James Hong as well.

Honestly, I found Sweeney Todd to be too shallow of a character, there really wasn't much depth to her. I think it was more about the people he was with.

What was wrong with the hotel, here's a short list:

AC wasn't working, and was 96 degrees with 60% humidity. 4 roaches killed in the first night. No stoppers for the bath tubs. 2 towels for 4 people, no clean towels in the place. White socks turning brown by walking on the floor. Syringe casings on the floor. WiFi was a joke at best. The door to our second room had to be bolted shut, otherwise it wouldn't lock, which meant we had to leave the hotel to exit our room. The staff was anything but helpful. There's more, but why bore you all with it.

Hrm, where has Kara gone?
