I actually like the turn base pause combat style. It gives you a chance to "plan out" your strategy of what you want to do. Key thing is to make sure all your characters are "locked on" to someone, and your main character (if you are using the force)...like with Force Wave, or Lightning Storm or Force Field, whatever, that you are locked in on the "central" bad guy against you. That way you cover the whole "field" of enemies.

It is also very important how you "build up" your characters. Range Specialists, Melee Specialists, Techs, and your main character of course.

I think your first time through the game it is definitely the hardest. Choose an easy class, like the Solider Class/Jedi Guaridan. You will have more HP and be more formidable in combat and you rely less on the force and your party members.

Most usable party members are Carth/Range Specialist dual blasters/rapid shot

Canderous/Melee combat, dual single blade vibroswords/blades and master power attack

Juhani/Jedi Guardian/Lightsaber Combat, two weapons fighting specialists with Master power attack and master flurry.

Bastila Shan/Jedi Sentinel/Lightsaber Combat, two weapons fighting/dual lightsaber/ Master Flurry

The game forces you to sometimes "take" certain characters, and some characters are not available for all parts of the game, so build them all up and focus on one speciality.

Range, remember, you want high dexterity
Melee you want high strength

Close combat Melee with Lightsabers/Swords are also going to require higher constitution

If you are really having a hard time, invest in a KOTOR strategy quide. It is priceless and will help you so much.

I will give you one very, very important hint. No matter what class/what side or gender, you need to have

Drain Life/Dreath Field powers for your main character. At the end, it will save your life.

The first time when I was going through KOTOR, I had a Solider/Jedi Guardian and didn't have those powers, and I died about 20 times in the final battle against Darth Malak. I don't want to give it away but you will need those powers!

If you are a Jedi Sentinel/Scout and or Jedi Master/Scoundrel,

I recommend the following starting stats

STR 10
DEX 16
CON 14
INT 10
WIS 16
CHA 14

Build up your Wisdom and Charisma, they are very important as far as force powers, how effective they are on enemies, how much damage they cause, etc. There is a very valuable circlet for you to find in the game if you are light side Jedi Master/Sentinel character, the circlet of Saresh, which is +5 Wisdom! You need this

Hope that helps. In the early levels do not use your main character, keep him in the party (obviously) but use Carth Onasi and his dual blasters/rapid fire mode. Put the best armor, items on Carth and let him carry your party. Have Mission Vao diarm mines, plant mines, open locks, etc. Keep her as a Melee character, to keep bad guys off from Carth. Even if Mission dies a lot in that strategy (and she will), it's OK, you can revive her later. Use Carth and as soon as he kills one bad guy move on with the targeting to the next. Always target the guys closest to you!

Remember, if the bad guy is wearing an energy shield (most will not but still) you need an ion blaster or a disruptor pistol with physical damage(unstoppable)

KOTOR can be really overwhelming at first, if you are not used to RPG's. Hang in there and again if it's too tough, get that strategy guide(I did) and it helped me a lot.

Alex

That's a really great run down Alex. I'll add two other powers that you'll have to have.

1) Force Lightning. Absolutely devastating on a massive scale. You'll need this in crowds.

2) Force Whirlwind. This is the best power to give you some "Breathing Room". Plus it stuns opponents.

If you can, try to build up your lightsabers as well. The extra crystals will do you some good.

Advanced Lightsaber Throw got me through alot on the first one. That + Adhesive Grenade made some battles (even some "boss" ones) pretty easy.

Sometime before the end I decided to "invest" in this (I had previously thought darkside powers affected your alignment but they don't). I'm so glad I did!

Right to expand on Jerry's force power guide. Invest in Charisma to off set the "penalty" for using force powers out of alignment. For example, if you are light side, listen to Jerry, still invest in the force lighting "tree" of powers until you max it out.

Keep Charisma high, you should have no less than 16 for Jedi Master/Sentinel.

This will make the lightning far more effective and cause you less force points to cast.

Here are the "mandatory powers" for me.

Force Wave(regardless of alignment)
Force Field (light side)
Insanity(dark side)
Kill (Dark side)
Force Lightning(regardless of alignment)
Force Heal (Obviously, you can also stop worring about medpacs)
Master Speed(critical to "escape" from certain enemies and give you chance to "get ready" for them again, and also when you combine this abilty with Master Flurry you will be causing SIX hits per round with your two lightsabers, that is very important!)
Master Valor(Cast this often, it greatly improves your defenses)
Force Immunity(Cast this in your "boss" battles against Darth Bandon, and other dark Jedi Masters)

OK, these are for KOTOR I, the strategy changes some for KOTOR II, but those are the must have powers.

Now depending on your class, Jedi Guardian you will have different stats and you will not be able to select all of those powers

Jedi Guardian you get more combat feats than any other class and less powers than any other class.

Jedi Sentinel, it's balanced, you get some combat feats and some powers

Jedi Master, you get a lot of force powers and a few combat feats.

Right from the start, you need to decide if you want your character to be a single weapon fighter or two weapons fighter. This is important, b/c you don't want to waste feats

You have no idea how hard it was to kill Malak in the end without that power! I nearly threw the controller at the x-box after the guy killed me for the 20th time in a row!!! On top of that, I was a "tank" as a Jedi Guardian my first time through, more than ready to take him out before he does his trick!!!

Kithryn, one more thing. Don't be afraid to use "stims" to boost your stats before big fights, that is very helpful!
If you are a Jedi Guardian, boost your DEX/CON
If you are the other two classes, boost your STR/CON
or in any case boost all 3 STR/DEX/CON if you need to.
Remember to use shields at all times, this will save your life
When your health gets to below half, use medpacs immediately.

Let us know how you are doing.

If the going gets rough, don't be afraid to run (ahem, strategically withdraw).
Just remember any attack the enemy was about to throw WILL hit, so if you're down to your last character, start running BEFORE you're in danger of dying, or you'll be killed.
A situation where you might want to run is if say, 2 party members are down, and your last character is surrounded by melee fighters/monsters. If you run, they'll give chase, but eventually it should end up one on one, and if you have enough space you can start healing yourself before you re-engage them.

Running + Rapid Shot served me well in KOTOR2, it might work the same way in 1 (not sure if it the startup was as fast, and it will take a long time to kill like this).

Great job Kithryn, the beauty of it all, is once you play the game one way, you can go the other way and you will know what to expect and will be better at the combat strategies.

Good Job Kithryn!

Alex and Battousai have some great points as well. Not that we all want to load you down with information...half the fun is learning some of these things yourself.

Oh I agree, but it also helps to know some things

I'm going through KOTOR I and KOTOR II for the last time (really!) myself. I've got a dark side female "scout" in both...it's the only option I haven't explored and I'm going for a ranged/force power specialists (which I have not done before, as I've always relied on lightsaber combat).

I have a dark side female going in KOTOR II right now, though I'll be concentrating on lightsaber more than force powers.

I've always wanted to make a "dirty" Jedi...and it's going to work I think, except for all the one vs. one battles at the end (where you do have be extremely proficient in lightsaber combat).

Another thing, the last time I went through KOTOR II with a light side Female Jedi Master, my game started to really "lock up" at the end. I kept getting errors when I was on Nar Shadaa after establishing trade routes and upgrading items. Then I figured out it was because I had so many games "saved" that I had to clear out almost all of my KOTOR II saved characters

See that happened to me as well, but I have maybe 8 games total saved...in fact I had to abandon my last Dark Jedi Warlord because of it.

You did Nar Shadaa last?

What happened and what version? I ran into a place on Nar Shadaa (xbox) where the game didn't transport me to where it should've after a cutscene and I had no way out of the level. After a few replays and reloads (I was already inside this "module" as some have put it), I killed everyone in the complex as the girl instead of killing them when you switch back to your main character, and was able to proceed (the cutscene which had previously been glitchy now played out properly as well).
Whether it was due to those actions or simple luck of not triggering the glitch, I don't know.

Jerry, I had about 12 characters saved on my x-box. I had to delete half of them.

No, I didn't do Nar Shadaa last, I was just "tieing up" loose ends missions. I had finished the tomb of Freedon Nadd and Palace at Onderon Missions and didn't want to go to the Jedi Enclave just yet.

So I went to Nar Shadaa and the game would just "lock up" during various places there, where I would buy all the items from both dealers and then go to the workbench in the beginning of the area (in the workshop, where the guy does your ship ID change), there I would try and bring out various party members for their high skills in certian areas and have them create upgrade parts for my Jedi Robes, Lightsaber, etc. Well, while I was doing all of that, the game kept on getting locked up (at least 4 different times) at various parts, so I couldn't even quite "pin point" what was the problem.

I've also found that KOTOR II has more bugs and locks up some after cut scenes versus KOTOR I, b/c the developers at Obsidian had to rush the game out at a ridiculous pace and I guess they didn't get to test it.

Is the PC version better when it comes to that? I am guessing it has to be, due to the fact that you are able to get "patches" downloaded to the game and update.

I was leaving Taris, just finished the cut scene from the Jedi Acadmey there, switching to a cut scene on the ship....and it freezes on load.

I've not had any success as with the PC version. I can't play it at full graphics at all and the cut scenes are still buggy.
