I saw a YouTube review from a pair of twin brothers who were talking about why they loved THAT "infamous" scene with Leia, you know:

And it really gave me a fresh perspective on why that scene is special. One of the brothers talked about how it is done with her as the outline of an angel, like an angelic Princess, and he believes that was the true intention of Rian Johnson, to honor Carrie's memory and all that she meant to STAR WARS in that scene, and the video really touched me because he got very emotional and said he feels personally offended that so many so-called fans are making fun of it with the silly references (Mary Poppins, Superman etc) because he believes Rian had a greater purpose in how to utilize her force powers in a representation of Carrie's everlasting spirit within the SW franchise.

Anyway, I know that was long-winded but like I said, the reviewer really made me view it in a positive light and appreciate why Rian did what he did in that scene.

...Is something I found very moving. Say what you will about him, but there IS still light in there. At the end of the day, he's a young man trying his best to be the baddest villain around, yet there is STILL something in him that lets him know he cannot quite go ALL the way into that darkness.

Part of the reason why Ben Solo is now Kylo Ren is because he felt personally abused by a family member, so this seems kind of ironic.

I agree that Mark's performance with the material he had misgivings about was excellent.

I feel like the only person on the internet who felt that Luke Skywalker's character was respected in this movie.

He was shown to be a lonely, broken figure at the end of TFA so why people are acting so shocked about seeing him still on this trail of self-deprecation and negativity, I do not understand. He's spent 30 years mourning the loss of his nephew to the Dark Side, which he feels personally responsible for. I think it's actually impressive that he's not MORE miserable than what they show.

Also, he gets a great kinda goodbye moment with his sister, AND he gets to have some last words with Ben, which was really the important part of the whole story.

The Force Projection in my opinion was a GENIUS move by Rian Johnson. It made sense. Luke knew he would be bested by Kylo's blasters the moment he confronted him, and he needed time to a) distract him from targeting Finn, Poe etc and b) have some meaningful last words with Ben before it was too late. That fight scene between Luke and Kylo is POWERFUL. Both visually and in how it's acted. The script is also eerie, when Luke tells him

"See ya around kid" - his reference to Ben's dad Han was another genius move by Rian. It's a way to let Kylo know, this isn't over. You can't do bad things without consequences and like Max von Sydow's character said,

"YOU CANNOT FORGET THE TRUTH THAT IS YOUR FAMILY." Kylo keeps trying to kill the Skywalker legacy, without realizing how much he actually depends on it himself.

I will be back soon with more thoughts, but for now:

1) Adam Driver's performance is top-notch Oscar worthy, in my opinion. Hope he is recognized at the Golden Globes, too. The incredibly layered performance he gives in this dual personality of Kylo Ren and Ben Solo is MESMERIZING and I'm proud that we have such a talented actor who was chosen to play both the lead villain and Han and Leia's son.

2) Without spoiling it, I thought the throne room scene was the very best scene in STAR WARS history, equal to Han Solo frozen in carbonite in ESB.

I actually liked the scene so I don't see the issue people have with it, however TLJ was filmed, obviously, while Carrie was still alive and they've said they changed none of Leia's scenes in the editing room after Carrie's death, so I don't see how anything could be related to honoring her in TLJ other than the post-credit screen
