The Sword in the Stone #1

Welcome to The Sword in the Stone Appreciation thread!

Arthur (aka Wart) is a young boy who aspires to be a knight's squire. On a hunting trip he falls in on Merlin, a powerful but amnesiac wizard who has plans for Wart beyond mere squiredom. He starts by trying to give Wart an education (whatever that is), believing that once one has an education, one can go anywhere. Needless to say, it doesn't quite work out that way.

Release Date: December 25, 1963

Trivia About the movie

~Although Walt Disney never knew it, he himself was character designer Bill Peet's model for Merlin. Peet saw them both as argumentative, cantankerous, but playful and very intelligent. Peet also gave Merlin Walt's nose. This was the second instance in which Walt unknowingly served as model for a wizard, the first being the wizard Yensid from the Sorcerer's Apprentice in Fantasia (1940). This explains why the character was given the name Yensid. This read backwards is Disney.

~The only animated Disney movie from the 1960s not to have a Platinum DVD, a sequel, a TV show, or a live-action remake.

~The first Disney animated feature with songs by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. This pair created some of the studio's best songs going into the next decade -- probably the most famous of which are the songs from Mary Poppins.

~In the Squirrel scene, Merlin tells Wart that when a "girl squirrel chooses her man, it is for life!". In reality, however, the male and the female squirrel spend only a couple of nights together in the female's nest during a mating season (usually twice a year, one between December-February and the other between June-August), after which the male leaves the nest forgetting all about his family. It is the female then who is responsible for raising the baby squirrels.

~Many elements of Sleeping Beauty (1959) have been recycled into films such as The Sword in the Stone (1963), which reuses opening credit backgrounds and various animation sequences. The two most noticeable are the owl from the forest scene, who would inspire Archemedes, and Malificent in dragon form, which led to Madam Mim in dragon form.

Awww, The Sword in the Stone, I love watching it, it is so funny. Merlin is my favorite. I love how him and Arthur turn into fish, then the squirrels, and then when The Witch and Merlin turn into the diffrent animals.

I love this movie too, I haven't seen it in years. I use to watch it all the time when I was a kid though. I always liked the part where he and Merlin turn into squirrels too, lol.

I loved this movie as a kid. I really loved that it showed young Arthur since Camelot was my #1 favorite musical
