the book is amazing, Rach. I finished it yesterday and can't wait ill I have enough money to buy it.
I saw the commentary yesterday and finished the special features. During the toilet scene Ewan said he always gets asked how it was done & that's like the most frequent question so he's not going to say how it's done for the dvd. I wanted to know how it was done too so I guess if I ever meet him I have to ask him that question. I thought it was interesting how they used chocolate for the sh**. Somehow knowing that info doesn't help the ick factor of the scene. the movie goes by even faster when the commentary is on. __________________

What does "trainspotting" mean and what does it have to do with the book/movie?

trainspotting is a "hobby" where people spend their whole day in a train station writing down useless information about the trains in notebooks. There are people who have countless notebooks filled with info such as what time the trains enter and leave the station, what kind of train it is etc. Of course people who have lives would never do something like this. So heroin is basically substitued for trainspotting, where people who are addicts throw their lives away on something that's stupid and useless.
also in Mark's bedroom he has trains on his walls. And train tracks can symbolize the marks on a heroin addicts arms from shooting up. __________________

Yeah, and in Britain 'Trainspotter' has become a general term for anyone who's obsessive about something crazy. Or they can be called 'Anoraks' because those are the kinds of jackets Trainspotters wear.
Actually, when my British exchange student was here and I was rambling on about one of my many nerd hobby things, she was like, "You're such an anorak." I just about lost it, because I'm probably like one of the very few Americans who would have known what the heck she was talking about Rach __________________

it's so much fun when you're the only person who knows what's being talked about & everyone else is completely lost.
I never knew about the anoraks. Thanks for sharing the info, Rach. Now I can feel smart when I know what it is and no one else does __________________

Thanks LilMouse and Rach, that is very interesting. I can't believe people actually spend all day watching trains and recording the times. But they are better off doing that than doing heroin.
I read someone's comment about the movie online somewhere and they implied that Renton was going to start using heroin again and go back to his old ways at the end of the movie. It seems to me that he was starting a new life, a clean one. What do you guys think? Am I wrong? __________________

That's true. I rather spend my days looking at trains than doing drugs. It makes them happy.
I like to think that Renton is going to stay clean. He says at the end that he's going to be just like everyone else with the car, big screen TV, family etc. And he says he's looking foward to it. "Going straight and choosing life" I think he said. I took out Porno today from the library and the summary said Renton lives in Amsterdam and owns a club. It doesn't say anything about him doing drugs again. I'm looking foward to reading how much the characters have changed. __________________

I haven't read Porno so I don't know what 'actually' happens in the canon TS world... as for what I think, I don't know. I think it's open. You're supposed to hope that he can start a better life, but there's part of him that's still a scumbag you know
The line that states to me that this is a cliffhanger ending, not letting you know if he gets clean or not, is "There are final hits, and there are final hits. Which one would this be?" or something like that. But in the end, at least he has given himself *a chance* at getting clean. Around his friends, it's not possible. Remember how great he's doing until they all come along again? Rach __________________

I haven't seen this movie yet. I downloaded it yesterday, so I'll watch it later tonight. I already know I'm going to love it.

I can't wait to hear your opinions on the movie, Sasha Was I the only one upset that Mark & Diane don't stay a "couple"? I know it's really gross & illegal since she's under age, but I liked them together. Maybe when she turns 18 they can get back together *shrugs*. When reading the novel TS, Diane was only in one chapter so they really extended her part in the movie. And as I was flipping through Porno I saw the name Diane, but don't know yet if it's the same one. __________________

I see your point. What I didn't like was Diane had a boyfriend for 4 weeks (she said in a deleted scene). That had to be within that time frame that she was having sex with Mark. So it's not right that she was playing games with both of them. Other than that she didn't bother me.

I haven't had a chance to watch the commentary on TS yet. But apparently Danny and I are just on the same wavelength
I don't really like Diane, pretty much for the reasons mentioned. She compeltely duped Marc into sleeping with her. Now, here's the rub, though... had he known she was underage before hand, would he really *not* have slept with her, hmmm? Rach __________________

I think he would've still slept with her even if he did know she was underage. I think he was so desperate that anyone was looking good to him. Also later on when he's clean and she comes to his apartment, he doesn't refuse when she wants to come in.
So in Porno I just read when Mark is reintroduced in Amsterdam and SPOLIERS * * * * * He was saying that he didn't do heroin anymore, but he did do cocaine and ecstasy for a while. Now, he's completely clean and works out at the gym a lot * * * * * End of SPOILERS I didn't know if anyone wanted to know what's up with Mark incase you wanted to read the book and find out for yourself. __________________
