don't worry I don't hate you. I still can't believe the books got so popular. Like, how do books get to be best sellers? I don't even know how to get stories published.
I admired you for staying away from a series that everyone is making a fuss over. It takes willpower. And you're unique.
Aw, thanks so much! You made me feel better And yeah, I don´t understand so much popularity either...I´m not good at best sellers Ok, maybe only with LOTR...I really love those books!

But I like the discussion you´re having about it so far...It´s so different of what I always hear/read about T-books, I really like that

I never read LOTR. I don't get to read that many books.

most Twilight discussion consists of "OMGZ Bella and Edward are so ~*~dazzling~*~ together.

I don't think Ed/Bella are so dazzling.

True! that´s all I hear/read about them I even avoid the word "dazzling" now, really

When I was a kid I read "The Hobbit" because my father loved it...and when I finished it I thought it was amazing as well...And when I heard they were doing LOTR movies, I wanted to read them all as fast as I could, but I couldn´t catch up It wasn´t until last year that I finished the trilogy, lol.

I've seen a few episodes here and there, not enough to ship anyone though.

Omg...honestly...I kinda hate those books and I haven´t even read them I know it sounds silly but it´s just that every person I know from internet is talking about them and there is sooo much frenzy and fuss about the whole thing that I can´t help feeling sick of it...I feel I couldn´t read them even if I´d want to (which is ironic because I like Robert Pattinson so much!). Please don´t hate me *hides*
I want to go back in time to slap me for even picking up the book. I understand though, I was like that with Harry Potter at first but I got the first book for Christmas and really enjoyed it. Okay, my original point was that don't worry, I'm envious of you for not having read it.

Thank you. I just cannot comprehend how so many people really enjoy the story though, aside from poorly written (okay, I'll be honest I realize JK Rowling's writing is not the best, but it is so much better than Meyer's. Meyer tends to tell, while Rowling, in my opinion, shows), the characters for the most part are one-dimensional, but those who aren't are bad influences. Bella is a Mary Sue if I've ever seen one and apparently she takes risks after Edward leaves? Seriously? Ugh. Also she makes these horrible decisions without regard for any consequences. Edward is supposed to be gorgeous (though pale is not exactly how I'd define gorgeous), he's supposed to be caring (sneaking into the girl's room at night to "watch over her"? Creepy not caring), he's possessive (chasing away all her friends) and there's that 100 years difference between them, I don't care he's permanently 17, he's still got that 100 years experience.
Oh and the plot in the first book didn't appear for 320+ pages (and even then, when the plot really picked up, it was somewhere between page 370 and 380).

the word dazzling is tainted now

They're making a Hobbit movie. Is Elijah Wood and the other hobbits in it?

janet do you mind if I friend you on LJ? I'm rentsgirl.

oh, I learned all about this in my creative writing class. I am revising a fanfic from the very beginning because I used to tell rather than show and now it annoys me to no end. And I've been working on this fic for 4+ years.
But Jane Austen used to "tell" also. Pride and Prejudice is full of "telling."

she was pathetic in the 2nd book. That's when I started hating her. I didn't mind her so much in the 1st book, but the 2nd when she's doing crazy stuff, almost getting killed, just to hear Ed's voice in her head....nope, that doesn't sit well with me.

the first book was mainly set up. I do feel like certain characters - like Rosalie and Emmett and Esme can be more developed.

When I reread P&P I will have to keep an eye on that, somehow "telling" has never really annoyed me until Meyer. Maybe I'm ultra-sensitive to her writing.

Oh God, I thought she was horrible in book one, I'd hate to see her in the second book, and yet? I kinda wanna read it so I have more weapons in my arsenal.

I bet you're not as pale as Edward is made out to be, plus apparently kissing him is like kissing marble or something?

I would have liked Bella's father to be more developed. Let him cook and go "hey Bella, I didn't burn down the house or poison us!"

I like Charlie. But I think that has mostly to do with me picturing him to look like Will Sadler (the Sheriff from Roswell).

idk judge my paleness for yourself
kissing a marble statue must be fun.

telling makes scenes go by so much faster and I like things to be detailed, but no excessive details to the point where I start tuning things out.

I always pictured him younger, actually I always pictured him to have dark hair, and a darker complexion than Bella's.

touché. And here we go "His skin is "like marble"– very pale, ice cold, and sparkles in the sunlight." (from wikipedia)

I don't mind being told certain things, I like being able to picture the characters and the settings, but I also like to imagine the settings. For example, and I draw upon Harry Potter once again (gotta love rereading books, makes you forget everything else you've read), the hallway that Harry dreams about, the room with the prophecies? I always imagine it to be a bit lighter than how it was set in the Order of the Phoenix movie. I feel like I wouldn't be able to do that with the twilight series, or other really "telling" stories... unless they use the pond scene despite it not being in the book.

He did have her at a young age so he shouldn't be over 50.
the whole cop thing makes me picture him as an older dude.

the whole ice cold thing would make me not want to touch him. I rather cuddle up to Jacob.

sometimes even w/ all the description in the world I still can't picture a setting. I feel like certain descriptions are too wordy.
but in P&P's case there was hardly any description and if it wasn't for the movie I wouldn't know where the hell they were.

Ahh, Oh, looks like I'm closer according to the movie. Billy Burke is playing Charlie

Yeah, I think if I had my choices from anyone in Twilight I'd go for a human or stay alone.

Makes sense. My problem is I saw the movie first, so I keep picturing the setting like the movie made it out to be.

Like when I read Twilight I imagined Gaspar to be Ed b/c the fans wanted him and I imagined James to be Cillian Murphy because that's who the author wanted.

Wow, I didn´t know about that "telling" and "showing" difference...So, it sounds like "telling" it´s all about describing every single thing, with fancy adjectives and elaborated words..I agree that makes pages to fly...but I prefer when books leave something to our imagination

I don´t know about the cast yet..but I guess they won´t be there because the book is set many years before they were born. It´s all about the big adventure of uncle Bilbo Baggins. All I know so far is the Guillermo Del Toro is directing the movie and I´m excited about that

Anyway, all your conversation made me confirm that I don´t wanna read T-books. But I´ll watch the movie, just to stare at Robert Pattinson I´m pathetic

Ah, I'm actually more into the books, I feel that the movies in order to remain a reasonable length in time must give up some parts of the books I love. However, David Tennant plays Barty Crouch Jr. so yeah.

Actually showing is description-based, it allows people to visualize the scene through the five senses. An example (from writedesignonline.com) is:
Telling: The girls were excited.

Showing: Giggles and screams filled the arena. The soft curls were now damp with perspiration and the anticipation of the event. They held tight to each other in a mock effort to contain themselves. Arms flailed upward, and voices echoed in varying tones. The moment was here.

One of my favourite series (I believe I mentioned Nero Wolfe before) was written so that we couldn't really see Nero's thought processes. It worked really well though, the main character was the legman and so we'd get to see the reveal from his point of view. Does that make any sense whatsoever?

watch they take that out of the film and ALL the fangirls will be PO'd. Sparkling in a book works, but a movie...it'll be weird, yet dazzling.

I think it makes sense. Like everything is a surprise to us because it's a surprise to him?
