They can be brothers that were raised separately. JJ was raised by their Canadian mother, since he's Canadian in real life, and Ewan by their Scottish father.

She's older than JJ, but younger than Ewan. I say make her a full sibling. So their Canadian mother took the youngest two and the father kept his firstborn. We can make him a junior, so Ewan was kept by his namesake.

Poor Ewan's character must have grown up feeling unwanted by his mommy that she so easily left with 2 of his siblings and let him stay with daddy.

We can make daddy a typical narcissistic patriarch that took Ewan by force, while the mother was only able to escape with the babies. He can be a Begbie in personality.
