Well, names ending in -xter indicate a female, yet names like Baxter and Dexter are given to males. I like how the accurate definition of the name for Baxter is given, yet it's labeled as a male name.

Did those names used to be female but 100s of years ago they turned into male names?

They're still female. Usage doesn't change it's historical meaning. They're just now more popular amongst males, like many male names are more popular for females now.
